FC Barcelona came back from two goals down in the last 20 minutes to win a LaLiga match for the first time in the 21st century
FC Barcelona regained the lead in LaLiga EA Sports 2024-25 thanks to an epic victory against Atlético de Madrid (2-4). The 'colchoneros' went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Julián Álvarez (45') and Alexander Sorloth (70'), but the team managed by Hansi Flick responded by equalizing the match in just 6 minutes. Goals from Robert Lewandowski (72') and Ferran Torres (78') established a tie that was eventually broken in the second half.
Both in the League and in the Cup, Atleti had frustrated Barça with two goals in stoppage time to seal a 1-2 (League) and a 4-4 (Cup), in both cases with Sorloth as the protagonist. Well, this Sunday was the time for revenge for the Catalans, who took a golden victory from the Metropolitano thanks to goals scored by Lamine Yamal (90+2') and, again, Ferran (90+6').
Barça's records with their comeback against Atlético
For Barcelona, the match against Atlético was the first in LaLiga this century where the team managed to win after overcoming a two-goal deficit by the 70th minute. The last time the azulgrana team turned around a two-goal deficit to earn three points was in the 2013-14 season, against Villarreal. Gerardo 'Tata' Martino's team was down 2-0 at El Madrigal in the 54th minute, but turned the score around thanks to two own goals and another from Leo Messi in the 82' (2-3).
A more similar reaction to Sunday’s at the Metropolitano was another comeback, also against Villarreal as visitors, in the 2018-19 season (4-4). The team then managed by Ernesto Valverde was down 4-2 in the 89th minute, but goals from Leo Messi and Luis Suárez in the 90' and 90+2', respectively, allowed the Catalans to rescue a draw from what is now the Estadio de La Cerámica.
Additionally, the azulgrana team is the first team capable of overturning a two-goal deficit against Atleti since Diego Simeone's arrival. The last time the 'colchoneros' squandered a similar lead was on November 4, 2007, against Villarreal (3-4). Javier Aguirre was the coach of the Madrid team, while Manuel Pellegrini was in charge of the 'Yellow Submarine'. The 'rojiblancos' were winning 2-0 in 25 minutes, but a double from the Turk Nihat (70' and 90') turned the score around in the second half.
And regarding Barça's unbeaten streak this 2025, the run across all competitions is 18 matches (15 wins and 3 draws), with a tally of 60 goals for and 20 against. In LaLiga, Hansi Flick's team matched the seven victories they obtained at the start of the tournament. The balance between August and September was 23 goals scored and 5 conceded, while this 2025, the culés have scored 23 goals, conceding another 4.
