Athletic renewed Nico Williams when the winger seemed to have everything settled to sign with Barça. Javier Tebas' interference in the operation was key to truncating the transfer

The renewal of Nico Williams with Athletic Club was a hard blow for the sports planning of FC Barcelona. Although, in principle, the Basque player expressed his express desire to wear the Blaugrana shirt, finally the negotiation with the 'culés' collapsed, in good measure, 'thanks' to the management of Javier Tebas.

And the fact is that the president of LaLiga, in addition to curbing Barça's room for maneuver due to the ever-changing rules of 'Fair Play' financial, also leaked detailed information about the club's economic situation to Athletic, which, finally, allowed the Bilbao team to convince its star to rule out his move to Catalonia.

In this regard, the president of the National Center of Football Coaches of Spain (CENAFE), Miguel Galán, who has always openly criticized Tebas' management in the employers' association, assured that the manager harmed Barcelona "through public statements and breach of his obligations with the duty of confidentiality".

Javier Tebas violated Barça's confidentiality in the 'Nico Williams operation'

Through an extensive message on his 'X' account, Galán assured that the president of LaLiga held several meetings with the Athletic board where he "violated the duties of loyalty and confidentiality", this by leaking detailed information on the current situation of the 'Azulgranas' in terms of 'Fair Play'.

At the moment, Barça is still unable to return to rule 1:1 and, in addition, is exceeding its salary margin. This prevents them from registering any reinforcements this summer, as well as updating the registration of the players in their squad who renew contracts.

Not in vain, Pau Víctor and Dani Olmo were registered via precautionary measures, thanks to the intervention of the Higher Sports Council (CSD). If it depended on LaLiga, both players would have had to terminate their contracts in January to obtain their respective federative licenses again.

How did Javier Tebas affect the negotiation between Barça and Nico Williams?

In that sense, Miguel Galán explains that, as a result of the conversations between Athletic and Javier Tebas, Nico's agent, Félix Tainta, took a turn in the negotiation with Barça by demanding a release clause, anticipating that at the beginning of the 25/26 season Barça would still not be able to register the player, as happened with Olmo the previous season (the Terrassa player was registered on matchday 3).

Therefore, the president of CENAFE considers that Joan Laporta did the right thing by refusing to include this clause in Williams' contract, since it meant an unacceptable risk for the administration of the club, having already paid the 62 million euros (including the CPI) of the footballer's clause.

"That clause would constitute a serious violation of the principles of diligence and care in asset management, in addition to representing an infraction susceptible to civil and criminal liability for those responsible for the administration of the club", Galán pointed out.

Well, the truth is that Athletic got away with it, renewing Nico Williams until 2035 with an increase of 37 'kilos' to his clause (now 95 M). Meanwhile, Javier Tebas once again truncated the market plans of a Barça again harmed by the rules of 'Fair Play', applied at convenience to limit the Blaugrana salary and financial margin.
