After Barça's draw against Rayo (1-1), Real Madrid maintains the LaLiga leadership. This is how the standings are on matchday 3!
Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid closed matchday 3 of LaLiga EA Sports 2025/26 as leaders, thanks to FC Barcelona's draw against Rayo Vallecano (1-1). The 'culés' added only one point after a very tough match in a Vallecas in deplorable conditions.
In a real potato field, Hansi Flick's team stumbled for the first time this season despite going into the break with an advantage. A penalty scored by Lamine Yamal in the 40th minute gave the 'azulgrana' team an initial advantage, although the draw, until that moment, was fair due to the multiple clear chances wasted in both areas.
However, Rayo managed to equalize the actions in the 67th minute with a goal from Fran Pérez. The newly entered player took advantage of an 'azulgrana' defensive lapse after a corner from Isi Palazón from the right.
After the draw, Barça has 7 points out of a possible 9, a couple less than Real Madrid and Athletic Club. The 'blancos', for now, are leaders for having a better goal difference. Rayo, meanwhile, remains in the middle of the table with 4 points.

Athletic also keeps up the fight for the lead

In this way, the 'merengues' maintain the lead before the first break of the season thanks to a victory over Mallorca (2-1). Xabi Alonso's team goes into the break with an ideal score (9), thanks to goals from Arda Güler and Vinicius Jr.
The Balearic team had taken the lead with a goal from Vedat Muriqi in the 18th minute, but the 'merengues' turned it around in a flurry of two minutes with goals from the Turk and the Brazilian, both in the 37th and 38th minutes, respectively.
As things stand, Madrid has 9 points out of a possible 9, just like Athletic. Ernesto Valverde's team maintains the perfect pace in La Liga after their victory against Betis (1-2). Marc Bartra (own goal) and Aitor Paredes scored the goals for the Basque victory in Seville.
Matchday 3 ended this Sunday with the matches Celta 1-1 Villarreal and Espanyol 1-0 Osasuna. The 'pericos' are fifth with 7 points, the same as the 'Yellow Submarine' and Barcelona. Marcelino's team let the victory slip away in Balaídos due to a goal from Borja Iglesias in the last minute.
Atlético doesn't take off, Girona sinks
Matchday 3 began on Friday with victories for Elche and Valencia over Levante (2-0) and Getafe (3-0), respectively. These results allow the 'ilicitanos' and 'valencianos' to temporarily move up to 6th and 8th place in the standings.
On Saturday, in addition to Real Madrid's victory over Mallorca, Oviedo and Sevilla added their first victories over Real Sociedad (1-0) and Girona (0-2). Montilivi's team is still in total crisis and has conceded 10 goals in 3 matches, scoring only 1.
Another team that has had a forgettable start to the season is Atlético de Madrid. The 'colchoneros' barely managed to salvage another draw at Alavés' ground (1-1), thanks to an illegal goal from Giuliano Simeone in the 7th minute.
The Argentine winger was offside in the action, but the VAR overlooked the play. Luckily for the locals, Carlos Robles equalized before halftime. In this way, the 'rojiblancos' barely accumulate 2 points out of a possible 9. LaLiga will return on the weekend of September 13 to 15, as next week there will be a break for the FIFA date.
