FC Barcelona defeated Atlético de Madrid (3-1) despite missing a penalty in the first half. In the 37th minute, with the score still tied at one goal apiece, Robert Lewandowski sent his shot from the white spot into the clouds, thus wasting the opportunity to celebrate his ninth goal in the tournament.

Dani Olmo had drawn the penalty after a very clear foul by **Pablo Barrios**. Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea did not hesitate to award the foul, a decision backed by Pablo González Fuertes from VAR. 'Lewy' took the ball, but unfortunately missed the shot.

The Pole wanted to secure it with a cross shot directly into the top corner of Oblak's goal. However, although the Slovenian dived to the opposite side, **the '9' executed a terrible shot, which went straight into the stands of the South Goal**. Luckily, Barça managed to come back in the second half, with another couple of goals scored by Olmo and Ferran Torres.

Lewandowski Reached an Unprecedented Record with Barcelona

In matchday 8, against Sevilla (4-1), Robert also missed a penalty in the 75th minute. After a foul inside the box on Alejandro Balde, the 37-year-old forward took charge of executing a spot-kick that could have given the Catalans a partial equalizer (2-2)Lewandowski, on that occasion, also tried to adjust a cross shot with his right foot, but **the ball went wide of the post**. Goalkeeper **Vlachodimos** had guessed the side and, had it been on target, he likely would have saved the shot.

On matchday 12, against Celta (2-4), the blaugrana's number 9 also took a penalty in the 70th minute, with a strike very similar to the one in the Sevilla match. This time, luckily, the ball went into the net, although goalkeeper Radu came very close to saving it. In fact, 'Lewy' himself made a gesture of relief when celebrating the goal, aware that he had taken a rather unconvincing penalty.

In this way, Robert Lewandowski became the first footballer in Barcelona's 126-year history to miss two penalties in the same LaLiga season. A remarkable record, to say the least, for a goalscorer of his caliber.

Lewandowski missed his fourth penalty in La Liga with Barça

Since his arrival in LaLiga in 2022, the Pole has taken 18 penalties, with a record of 14 successful and 4 missed. In his first season, he missed one attempt (he hit the post against Almería in the victory at Camp Nou (2-0)).

Then, in 2024, he missed another against Villarreal in the 'manita' at La Cerámica (1-5). On that occasion, the forward also sent the ball to the woodwork. Despite the miss, that day the '9' scored a brace.

It remains to be seen if, from now on, Hansi Flick decides to keep Lamine Yamal as the penalty taker. The '10' already scored a penalty in the league against Rayo (1-1) and another in the Champions League against Olympiacos (6-1). Raphinha could also be an alternative, in addition to Marcus Rashford himself.
