The president of Sevilla reaffirmed the club's position regarding the relationship with Barça. Despite inviting them to the box, the tension between both parties remains
Aside from what happened on the field, the relationship between Sevilla and FC Barcelona is going through a delicate moment. The tension between both parties dates back to 2023, when after a couple of harsh statements from the Andalusian institution regarding the 'Negreira Case' and their absence at the board dinner during the visit to Montjuïc, the Blaugrana entity decided to sever relations with the Sevillians.
After this event, Joan Laporta decided not to attend the box at the Sánchez-Pizjuán last season, and the Sevilla board, led by José María Del Nido Carrasco, did the same in the first leg of the current season at Montjuïc. However, the situation changed this Sunday, February 9.
In the match corresponding to matchday 23 of LaLiga, which Barcelona won (1-4), Laporta did accept the invitation from the Sevillians and was present, along with 19 other representatives from the club and their Sevilla counterparts, in the box of the Nervión stadium, which could be a first rapprochement between both parties.
The president of Sevilla maintains his position with Barça
Despite this, the redirection of the relationship between the two clubs will not be easy. Before the match, Del Nido Carrasco spoke to the microphones of 'DAZN' and stated that "we have already expressed our position regarding the 'Negreira Case' and we are waiting for an explanation from FC Barcelona. We have invited them to the box, as they deserve, but there has been no board dinner and I will not sit in their box until they provide an explanation".
The Sevilla president doubled down and stated that "the relationships they broke remain in the same position. They are different. We have a position regarding the 'Negreira case' and they have not given a logical explanation to the football world" to conclude by affirming that "our position is clear and we are not going to change it". Laporta, for his part, did not want to make statements, but it is clear that the 'frictions' between institutions will not cease in the short term.
