Messi continues to inspire unprecedented global devotion. The city of Kolkata has unveiled the world's tallest statue dedicated to the Argentine star
Leo Messi continues to expand his legend beyond the pitch. At 38 years old, having just been crowned MLS champion with Inter Miami, the Argentine star continues to generate a global phenomenon that knows no borders.
This time, the epicenter of devotion is located in Calcutta, India's most populous city, where the world's tallest statue dedicated to the Argentine star has been unveiled.
The Tallest Statue in the World Dedicated to Leo Messi
The city's grand tribute arrived with the inauguration of a statue over 20 meters high, located in the Lake Town neighborhood. The sculpture depicts Leo Messi lifting the World Cup won with Argentina in Qatar 2022, an image that has already become iconic in football history.
The monument has been promoted by a local sports club and has the backing of municipal authorities, who wanted to pay tribute to a figure who transcends the strictly sporting. Despite coinciding with his visit to the country, the inaugural ceremony was held virtually and did not include the physical presence of Leo Messi.
According to the authorities, the decision was made for security and public order reasons, given the enormous concentration of people that could have occurred. Even so, the event was followed by thousands of fans and became a historic occasion for the city.
MESSI: An Unprecedented Global Phenomenon
The inauguration of this statue confirms an unquestionable reality: Leo Messi is a universal figure. Few athletes in history have managed to generate a cultural, social, and emotional impact comparable to that of the former Fútbol Club Barcelona player.
His legacy at the Barça club, where he became the top scorer and absolute benchmark for over a decade, remains a global reference and explains why his figure continues to be admired in every corner of the planet.
The tribute comes just a week after Messi was crowned MLS champion with Inter Miami, adding another title to an already unmanageable trophy cabinet. Far from retiring from the spotlight, the Argentine continues to expand his legend on and off the field, turning every public appearance into a global event.
Inter Miami's tour takes Messi to India
The visit of Messi is part of the so-called “GOAT Tour,” a promotional and sporting tour that will take Inter Miami players through several of India's major cities. Kolkata has been the first stop on a tour that seeks to bring international football closer to one of the fastest-growing markets on the planet.
The world champion arrived accompanied by some of his inseparable teammates, including Luis Suárez, Busquets, and Jordi Alba, which multiplied the anticipation. As was predictable, the arrival of Messi unleashed a real frenzy at Kolkata airport. Thousands of fans had gathered since the early hours of the day to try to get a close look at the most influential footballer of his generation.
Security was at its maximum, both due to the magnitude of the event and the social impact Messi has in the Asian country, where football is constantly expanding and where the Argentine is a revered figure.
Lionel Messi: Eternal Legend of Modern Football
The Calcutta statue is not just a monument of great dimensions. It is a reflection of what Leo Messi represents for millions of people: talent, perseverance, humility, and sporting excellence.
A legacy that was born at Barça, consolidated in Europe, and today continues to expand throughout the world, even thousands of kilometers from the Camp Nou.
