Barcelona dominates the historical record against Athletic in the Spanish Super Cup

FC Barcelona makes its debut this Wednesday, January 7, in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup against Athletic Club (8:00 PM), in what will be the ninth encounter between the two teams in the tournament. The Catalans and Basques have faced each other in four finals and one semifinal, the latter in the previous edition which ended with a Barça victory (0-2).

Since its creation in 1982, 41 editions of the Super Cup have been played, 15 of them decided in favor of a Barça that faced Athletic on eight occasions. The record so far favors the Catalans with 4 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses, 13 goals for and 11 against.

In 2025, Hansi Flick's team triumphed in Arabia with goals from **Gavi and Lamine Yamal (0-2)**. Previously, there had been four finals between the two, with two wins each.

Barça won 2 of their 15 Spanish Super Cups against Athletic

Barça won their first Supercopa in 1983, managed by César Luis Menotti, precisely against an Athletic side that had just won LaLiga. The Catalans, as Cup champions, prevailed at San Mamés in the first leg (1-3), a result that settled the final despite the 'lions' victory in the return leg at Camp Nou (0-1).

Subsequently, in 2009, the Barça team celebrated again in a Super Cup final against the Basques. Athletic got revenge in 2015 against a Barça that was also coming off winning their second treble, this time with Luis Enrique on the bench. Ernesto Valverde's team thrashed them in the first leg at San Mamés (4-0), while the return leg at Camp Nou ended in a draw (1-1).

With the current format, the Basques would again win a final against Barça, in 2021 in Seville (2-3 after extra time). A goal by Assier Villalibre in the 90th minute sent the match into extra time, where Iñaki Williams gave the title to Marcelino García's team. Leo Messi saw red in extra time, which was his only sending-off in a blaugrana shirt.
