Real Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Álvaro Carreras. The left-back will arrive at the Bernabéu for 50 million euros, being the 4th reinforcement for Xabi Alonso
Álvaro Carreras will be a player of Real Madrid from next season. Benfica closed the door to the Spanish international in June, as coach Bruno Lage prioritized having the left-back in the Club World Cup. However, after concluding the participation of both teams in the tournament, the 'eagles' have given the green light to the operation.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the 'Casa Blanca' will pay 50 million euros for Carreras, one of the left-backs that FC Barcelona had on their radar in 2024. Finally, the 'culés' ruled out entering the bidding due to the high economic aspirations of the Lisbon team.

The Spanish international also shared sports rights with Manchester United, which is why Benfica refused to accept an offer below 50 'kilos'. However, Madrid will pay Álvaro's clause in three installments, as they negotiated the transfer of the Argentine Franco Mastantuono (60 M€).
Fourth reinforcement of the summer for Madrid: third patch for a broken defense
In this way, Xabi Alonso adds his fourth reinforcement for the 25/26 season, the third in the back. The 'blancos' have already signed Dean Huijsen (62.5 M€) and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the latter through a compensation of 8 'kilos' to allow him to play in the World Cup. In total, there are 180.5 'kilos' in reinforcements.
The Englishman's contract with Liverpool ended on June 30 and the 'reds' did not want to give him a letter of freedom to debut earlier with Real. The operation, in that sense, was a fiasco for Madrid, as Arnold played five games at a fairly low level, although he gave a couple of assists. His absence in the semifinal against PSG, due to alleged muscle problems, did not please the coaching staff at all.
Now, with Álvaro Carreras, Xabi will try to recompose a defense that was a real sieve throughout the 24/25 season. After the beating from Paris, the team closed the season with 83 goals conceded, their worst record since 1998/99. The left-back, in theory, will be a starter, while Fran García will remain as an alternative after his good performance in the World Cup.
Álvaro Carreras leaves a sentenced player in the Real Madrid defense
In this way, the 'sacrificed' one would be Ferland Mendy, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his time at Real Madrid (he arrived in 2019). The 'merengues', in addition, do not rule out going for another center-back, as Raúl Asencio's performance in the United States was embarrassing, giving away three goals in as many games.
Antonio Rüdiger's low level has also generated concern. Although there is confidence in the adaptation of Huijsen and the recovery of Éder Militao, if Asencio leaves and David Alaba does not fully recover either, it is likely that Florentino Pérez will go for Ibrahima Konaté (Liverpool).
