The Blaugrana club will offer the German goalkeeper the agreed termination of his contract after closing the signing of Joan García for 25 million euros.
FC Barcelona plans to address the future of Marc-André ter Stegen in the coming days, once the incorporation of the young goalkeeper Joan García, from RCD Espanyol, is made official.
The club is already working on an offer to facilitate the departure of the German, whose high salary and contractual continuity until 2028 make coexistence with the new plans of the sports management difficult.
The imminent arrival of Joan García, for whom his release clause (25 million euros) will be paid, together with the intention of renewing Wojciech Szczęsny as an experienced alternative, sets up a new scenario in the Barça goal.
Faced with this, Barça has decided to propose a consensual solution to Ter Stegen: a termination with financial compensation that allows him to freely negotiate his next destination.
Joan García will be the new starting goalkeeper of FC Barcelona
The signing of Joan García is imminent. Barça has already agreed to pay his clause with RCD Espanyol (€25M), and the official announcement could come this week. At 24 years old, the Catalan goalkeeper has been one of the great revelations of LaLiga, key in the permanence of the Perico team and with a notable margin of growth. The sports management, led by Deco, considers it a strategic investment in the long term.
In parallel, the club hopes to renew Szczęsny, who would arrive as an experienced goalkeeper and competition for García. This combination of youth and experience is the formula that the new coach, Hansi Flick, endorses to face the 2025/26 season with guarantees.
In this context, the continuity of Ter Stegen is presented as an obstacle both sporting and financial.
Barça proposes an agreed termination to Ter Stegen
FC Barcelona has decided to act with pragmatism. Once Ter Stegen's participation with the German national team in the UEFA Nations League concludes, the club will present him with a formal offer: the early termination of his contract in exchange for the full payment of next year's salary. In this way, he would be given the letter of freedom so that he can negotiate with other teams without transfer costs.
The decision responds to both sporting and economic reasons. The German goalkeeper, with a contract until June 2028, receives one of the highest salaries in the squad, in addition to accumulating deferrals from previous seasons. Maintaining three international-level goalkeepers would be unsustainable in Barça's current financial context.
Ter Stegen wants to stay, but his future is uncertain
Although the club is looking for an exit, Marc-André ter Stegen has made it clear that he wants to continue. In his last public appearance, the German was forceful:
"I know that I will be at Barça next year. Nobody has spoken to me. I am very excited about this young and dynamic team"
However, the panorama has changed. With the probable starting position of Joan García and the presence of Szczęsny as support, Ter Stegen's role would be relegated. This could directly affect his chances of being a starter with Germany in the 2026 World Cup.
From the club it is considered that his departure is the most logical option, although sources close to the player warn that it will not be an easy negotiation.
For the moment, the specific interest of other clubs has not been revealed, although the goalkeeper has been linked to Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia. The big question: will Ter Stegen opt to continue in the European elite or for an economically powerful destination?
