Ter Stegen will go on loan to Girona until the end of the season, but Barça does not want to face him in the Catalan derby of LaLiga's Matchday 24, at Montilivi. For this reason, his loan will include the 'fear clause'
Girona will soon announce the signing of Marc-André ter Stegen. The goalkeeper will undergo his medical examination this Tuesday and already said goodbye to the FC Barcelona squad on Monday, prior to the team's trip to Prague to face Slavia. 'Mats' will play the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at Montilivi, in a deal that will include the so-called 'fear clause'.
In LaLiga, clubs can loan out their players on the condition that they do not face them in the tournament, unless the other team pays an extra sum to have the player available for that match. Barça and Girona are set to face each other again in matchday 24 of LaLiga at Montilivi, on February 14th or 15th, and the Catalan team does not want to see their goalkeeper in the opposing goal that day.
How much would Girona have to pay to field Ter Stegen against Barça?
According to 'Esport3', Ter Stegen's 'fear clause' would force a considerable sum to be paid to the Girona team, who would prefer to discard this option and keep the experienced Paulo Gazzaniga in goal for the match corresponding to matchday 24. In the first leg, Barça beat Girona at Montjuïc (2-1) with a last-minute goal from Ronald Araujo
Last season, Girona decided against paying this clause for Oriol Romeu, who played the 24/25 season on loan with Míchel's team. The 'albirrojos' would have had to pay around 3 million euros to field the midfielder against Barça, something that ultimately did not happen
This year, the figure could be even higher, considering that the Blaugrana team will assume the majority of Ter Stegen's salary while the German plays in Montilivi. According to 'SPORT', Girona will assume approximately 25% of 'Mats' salary, which is around 7 million net per year (14 million gross).
This means the team managed by City Group **would pay around €1.75 million of the 33-year-old goalkeeper's salary**, whose loan will not include a purchase option. The goalkeeper will return to Can Barça at the end of July, after the World Cup, with two seasons remaining on his contract, until June 2028
Ter Stegen could debut next Monday at Montilivi
Once Marc-André ter Stegen's loan is finalized, the Mönchengladbach player hopes to immediately be at Míchel's disposal. If his registration is not delayed, the goalkeeper could play his first match next Monday, January 26, on matchday 21 of La Liga against Getafe (9:00 PM).
'Mats' has not played a league match since May 18, 2025, against Villarreal (2-3). In the 25/26 season, the Barça captain only recently received medical clearance in late November after undergoing back surgery in July. His only appearance was against Guadalajara (0-2), in the Copa del Rey round of 32.
