The board of FC Barcelona will soon close the renewal of Eric García. According to 'Mundo Deportivo', the Azulgrana sporting director, Deco, held a meeting on Monday with the defender's representative, Iván de la Peña, to finalize details on the new contract for the player from Martorell.

Eric is one of the players whose contract with the club ends in 2026, and the board hopes to resolve all pending matters before the end of the year. In the case of the '24', there is full willingness from the player to stay, as he feels valued by the club and supported by Hansi Flick. The coach has been decisive for the continuity of the 24-year-old defender.

Eric García consolidates his place in Hansi Flick's lineup

García had his return to Girona well underway his return to Girona in January, but the German coach convinced him to stay. Flick highly values the versatility of the youth player, as well as his good attitude and commitment in every training session and on the field.

This season, the player from Martorell has started in the first four league matches, playing as a right-back against Mallorca (0-3) and Levante (2-3), but returning to his natural position in the center of the defense against Rayo (1-1) and Valencia (6-0).

In total, he has accumulated 355 minutes of action, being replaced only 5' from the end in Vallecas. On Thursday, against Newcastle, he could take a definitive step towards being a starter if Flick keeps him in the XI at St. James Park and Eric performs at a high level. Otherwise, Ronald Araujo would return as Pau Cubarsí's partner.

In any case, the Barça board does not want to delay his renewal any longer, as they consider him an important asset in the medium and long term. The defender has increased his value to 18 million euros, according to Transfermarkt, and the Azulgrana team could cash in on his transfer in the future if both parties agree to part ways.

Details of Eric García's new contract with Barça

The logical thing would be for Barcelona to renew Eric García for four or five more years, until 2030 or 2031, as Jules Koundé, Lamine Yamal and Araujo recently did. The central defender's release clause would remain at 400 'kilos', while his salary could undergo a slight adjustment.

Currently, the Catalan player earns around 6 million gross per year. Eric returned to Barça in 2021 on a 'free transfer' from Manchester City and, since then, has scored 6 goals and provided 5 assists in 119 official matches. In the 23/24 season, he played on loan at Girona, but Hansi Flick recovered him last summer.

With the departure of Iñigo Martínez, the coaching staff has given him more responsibility to accompany Araujo and Cubarsí. After resolving his renewal, the board will do their homework with Frenkie de Jong and Andreas Christensen, who are also fully willing to stay.
