Eric García's renewal: Key for Flick's Barça defense?

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The FC Barcelona board continues to work on pending renewals before the opening of the next summer market. Once Lamine Yamal's new contract is signed and with the extension of Wojciech Szczesny, Eric García could be the next player in the Barça squad to extend his link with the club.

The player from Martorell, against all odds, ended up being a key piece for Hansi Flick, a true wildcard thanks to his versatility to cover defensive positions. Like Frenkie de Jong, the defender's contract ends in 2026, which is why his renewal becomes a priority.

The '24' was a backup in midfield in the first half of the season, lending a hand to Marc Casadó as a defensive pivot when De Jong and Marc Bernal were 'KO'.

After the return of the Dutchman and the renewal of Ronald Araujo, Eric was convinced to leave in January, as Míchel insisted on recovering him in a Girona that never managed to get back on its feet this season, but Flick convinced him to stay.

After several appearances in his natural position (center-back), Jules Koundé's injury at the end of April put the team in serious trouble. Again, García took charge, responding very well as a right-back in the last month of competition.

In total, the defender played 45 games (2,104 minutes) in which he scored 5 goals and provided 3 assists. To his solvency in defensive tasks, he also added a remarkable offensive display, being a key piece in the aerial game and in set pieces. Always willing to help, the youth player knew how to earn his place and everything points to the fact that, soon, he will renew his contract.

A totally unexpected scenario, since six months ago many considered his return to Girona a done deal. At the moment, Eric García has one season remaining on his contract and the board's idea is to sign him for three more years, until June 2026, probably with an adjustment in his emoluments.

Until 24/25, the defender billed 6 million euros gross per year, while his termination clause remains at 400 'kilos'. However, Barça could well have accepted around 20 M€ for his transfer in the two previous transfer windows.

The player from Martorell returned to the Barça team in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer after his time at Manchester City. Since then, he has 6 goals and 5 assists in 115 appearances with Barça. In 23/24, he played 31 games with Girona during his one-season loan in which he also scored 5 goals.
