FC Barcelona has sealed the renewal of Gerard Martín, a player whose contract expired in 2025 and who will now have a new contract until 2028

Calendar of FC Barcelona

One of the players from FC Barcelona who has taken a step forward in this 2024-25 season under the guidance of Hansi Flick is Gerard Martín. The Barcelona-born player, who joined the Blaugrana team in the year 2023 from UE Cornellà, has become a reliable option for the German coach when it comes to replacing Alejandro Balde at the left-back position.

In this regard, Hansi Flick has not hesitated to field him in 18 matches, accumulating 753 minutes of play in which he has had the opportunity to provide a couple of assists and has enjoyed eight starting appearances. He has positioned himself as an important alternative when the German coach perhaps needs a more defensively focused option to close out games.

With this scenario in mind, it is not surprising that the Blaugrana team wants to demonstrate to the full-back the importance he has in Hansi Flick's sporting project, which has resulted in a necessary renewal of his contract with Barcelona. This agreement was set to expire on June 30, 2025.

At this point, Gerard Martín has already managed to seal his renewal agreement with the Catalan team. It extends until June 30, 2028 and was signed in the club's offices at noon on Thursday, January 23, in a ceremonial event attended by the president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta; the executive in charge of Youth Football, Joan Soler; the sporting director, Deco; and the Youth Football director, José Ramón Alexanco.

In the statement issued by FC Barcelona, it is important to note that it was not specified whether the player's contract was updated. It is worth recalling that Gerard Martín plays with the B team, despite actively participating with the first team.

This situation must be addressed soon, as according to the regulations of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), a player has until the age of 23 at most to remain registered as a B team player in the First Division. Gerard Martín is close to reaching this age, specifically on February 26.
