The board of FC Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong must resolve the terms of the 28-year-old midfielder's new contract as soon as possible. The willingness of the parties to extend the link that ends in 2026 is total, but there are still several loose ends to resolve because the club has not yet settled its deferred debt with the '21'.

According to what was agreed after his last renewal, the Dutchman received a gross salary of 19 million last season, which could reach 25.3 'kilos' including the loyalty bonus (4.2 M€) plus another 2.1 million extra in variables.

Well, Barça's idea is to renew him for four seasons, until June 2029, with a slight improvement in his contract that allows the club to restructure the outstanding payments from his previous contract. The board has already settled all the outstanding debt with the rest of the players, derived from the deferrals approved due to the pandemic.

In that sense, Frenkie is guaranteed to maintain the status of the second highest paid player in the squad, behind Robert Lewandowski (26 M€ gross). In addition, his new contract will be key to avoiding another 'Olmo case' with Nico Williams, who will be Barça's star signing this summer.

Barça's formula to make room for Nico Williams 'thanks' to Frenkie de Jong

However, with De Jong it is necessary to agree on a new payment scheme that allows the midfielder to collect what is owed without affecting the culé finances, maintaining a base salary of around 20 'kilos' and with the peace of mind of knowing that he is untouchable in the blaugrana sports project.

The player has given clear signs of his desire to stay several more years in Barcelona and Joan Laporta has publicly supported him. In principle, the objective was to renew him before June 30, but the negotiations have been delayed a little longer than expected.

Now, Barça needs to resolve De Jong's new contract as soon as possible in order to fit in the new contracts of Lamine Yamal and Joan García, together with the signing of Nico Williams. The restructuring of the '21's' salary is key to amortizing the arrival of the Athletic 'crack', since the culés are still exceeded in their salary mass and, for the moment, cannot register new players.

Ansu Fati's departure is a decisive first step to free up 'Fair Play'. Similarly, the way in which the club distributes Frenkie's emoluments over the next four years will be very important to make room in the squad for the incorporation of the Basque winger.

Barça also plans to make a couple more additions to shield its defense and attack. A left-back and another striker are on the table, waiting to resolve the outstanding payments of the 'levers' of Barça Studios and the VIP seats of the Spotify Camp Nou.

It is also necessary to resolve the departures of the rest of the discards, waiting to be able to cash in with players such as Andreas Christensen, Pablo Torre and Gerard Martín. Other confirmed departures are Iñaki Peña, Héctor Fort and Pau Víctor, while with Marc-André ter Stegen the situation is much more complex.

In any case, with at least seven departures to be finalized and several million pending to enter the coffers, Barça is confident of balancing the books in time to arrive at the Joan Gamper Trophy (August 10) with all its players registered to start the 2025/26 season. Will the blaugrana board be able to resolve all its folders in time?
