Julián Álvarez was key in 24/25, but Atlético is studying moves in attack. Will there be changes? We tell you everything

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The future of Julián Álvarez at Atlético de Madrid could be much more open than expected. Despite the 'Spider' being the best player for the 'Rojiblancos' in the 2024/25 season —an award given by the fans themselves— and backed by statistics, with 29 goals (team leader) and seven assists in 54 appearances, his name would be on the list of departures during this summer market.

And yes, in recent weeks there have been a series of movements that may suggest that Atlético, for the right offer, could consider the departure of 'The Spider' this summer. It all comes down to one reason: the 'overbooking' of forwards that 'Cholo' Simeone's team would face for the upcoming season if a specific incorporation materializes.

Atlético's attack saturates: Griezmann renewed and Gyökeres on the radar

Recently, the renewal of Antoine Griezmann was confirmed, who was out of contract in 2026 and has now extended it until 2027. A move that further reinforces an offensive front that already has the Norwegian 'giant' Alexander Sørloth and that, according to reports from Portugal, is very close to incorporating the Swedish 'killer', Viktor Gyökeres, one of the most coveted names in the summer market.

With this possible excess of forwards in the squad, and considering that Simeone usually employs a 4-4-2 scheme, which only leaves room for two well-defined forwards, a big question arises: who will leave? And everything points to Julián Álvarez being the main candidate. The reason? Of the four 'gunners' —counting the possible arrival of Gyökeres—, both the Swede and Griezmann look immovable: one for being the great incorporation of the summer and the other for having been recently renewed.

This leaves two names on the table: Sørloth and Julián Álvarez. Although from Atlético de Madrid they have repeated, directly and indirectly, that the Argentine is not for sale and that their intention is to keep him, the truth is that there will be no shortage of proposals. And not only that: some of them could exceed €100M. An amount that would represent a key economic injection to amortize the possible purchase of Gyökeres, which would involve a considerable outlay.

Will Julián Álvarez be the one chosen to leave Atlético this summer?

Now we just have to wait and see what happens with the future of Julián Álvarez. If the 'Colchoneros' decide to prioritize the economic aspect, his departure could materialize, with several clubs —including FC Barcelona— attentive to the situation. But if the sporting aspect weighs more, they may choose to keep a forward with extraordinary conditions, who has already shown that he can be decisive in the project of 'Cholo' Simeone, with whom he has a contract until 2030.
