FC Barcelona are closer than ever to saying goodbye to the possible signing of Nico Williams. Therefore, they will have to decide if they want to go in another direction or settle for what they have at the moment and try to go for more next season
The FC Barcelona board is faced with a dilemma. After a summer that has been full of uncertainty regarding Nico Williams, everything seems to indicate that the winger will stay at Athletic Club next season. The Bilbao directors have given him the honour of wearing the '10' shirt and the Spaniard would be delighted with the recognition. Therefore, it is time for Deco and Joan Laporta to make a decision on possible reinforcements.
And the fact is that the sporting management focused all their efforts on getting both Dani Olmo and the Navarrese. However, only the former RB Leipzig player bore fruit, something quite positive if we take into account the versatility he brings on the field of play. But, without a doubt, not being able to count on Williams is a hard blow, which they will have to assume quickly because there are less than three weeks left until the transfer window closes. This forces us to ask ourselves: Is it really necessary to sign a winger this summer?
Nico does not arrive. Do we have to sign?
Right now, Barcelona has several alternatives that could be the 'replacement' for Nico Williams, such as Kingsley Coman, Jadon Sancho, Federico Chiesa or Luis Díaz. All of them are top wingers in their clubs and can contribute to Hansi Flick's team. Although, it must be taken into account that each of these players have particular situations with their teams, which would make their departures either very complicated or very expensive for a board that does not want to spend too much money.
Therefore, unless a player arrives on loan, jumping into the market headlong would not be the most advisable thing to do. Much less when they could try to recover financially, increase income and go for a truly 'top' signing in 2025 such as Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala or Rafael Leao, who, despite their youth, have a lot of experience in Europe and would fit in very well under the orders of the German coach.
In addition, it must be considered that Williams' rejection could offer Olmo the opportunity to play on the left wing, which he is very good at, or players like Raphinha, Ferrán or Ansu Fati would have the opportunity to prove their worth to the German coach and show that they deserve to be starters in the Barça team. At this time, the board does not have to rush into making a 'mediocre' signing that they will have to say goodbye to in two or three seasons, so they will have to think things over calmly and make the most appropriate decision, if they do not want to continue sinking the club's economy.
