Manchester United joins the list of those interested in Ter Stegen. Although the 'red devils' will not play in European competitions in 25/26, they can guarantee the starting position to Barça's '1'
Marc-André ter Stegen continues to add 'girlfriends' ahead of the summer market that begins this week. The German, despite his annoyance with the board and the coaching staff of FC Barcelona for knowing he is marginalized for 2025/26, knows that he has no choice but to find a team for next season, because for now he is the third Barça goalkeeper behind Joan García and Wojciech Szczesny.
According to the latest information, Manchester United, aware of the German international's situation at Can Barça, could soon offer him a very interesting contract to join the sports project led by Rúben Amorim.
The 'red devils' are coming off a disastrous season, without titles and out of European competitions for 25/26. Despite this, the club is committed to a deep renovation of its squad and the Portuguese coach plans to incorporate another goalkeeper.
United's alternatives to negotiate with Barça for Ter Stegen
Although André Onana has a contract until 2028, Amorim is not at all happy with the Cameroonian's performance and Ter Stegen is one of the names on the 'Man U' radar. In principle, the club does not rule out offering a low sum (in the order of 10 million euros) to Barça for their captain or, failing that, agreeing to a loan with an option to buy.
For the culé board, any of these routes is feasible, as long as it allows them to get rid of Marc-André's contract. The 33-year-old goalkeeper earns around 14 'kilos' gross per year and Barça needs to free up space in its wage bill to register its new signings.
Hence, given a reluctant stance to leave Ter Stegen, the Azulgrana team also has the option of terminating his contract, with prior financial compensation for the three remaining seasons in the German goalkeeper's contract.
This situation gives United a certain advantage to negotiate with Barça, but not with the player. The most difficult thing will be to convince the goalkeeper to change his mind and join a team in full reconstruction that, although it would guarantee him the starting position, will have to improve a lot to aspire to win a title in 25/26.
United wants to get rid of Onana as soon as possible
However, before starting a formal negotiation with Barça for the '1', Manchester must resolve the departure of André Onana. The Cameroonian arrived in England in 2023 for 50 million euros and his market value has dropped considerably during his stay at Old Trafford.
At the moment, the 29-year-old goalkeeper is listed at around 25 'kilos' in Transfermarkt and the club does not want to risk another disappointing season with the former Inter and Ajax goalkeeper under the sticks. Hence, United is betting on a low transfer, for an amount close to 30 M€ to release the '24'.
For now, there are no formal offers for Onana, but there is manifest interest from several clubs in Saudi Arabia. A destination, for now, ruled out by the Cameroonian goalkeeper. In 24/25, André conceded 65 goals in 50 games (1.3 per game), with 11 clean sheets, 9 of them in a Premier League in which he conceded 44 goals in 34 games.
