Bayern Munich is looking for a left winger after Florian Wirtz's umpteenth refusal. Will Nico Williams be the next market bombshell for the Bavarians?
Nico Williams may have played last Sunday against FC Barcelona (0-3) his last game with Athletic Club. The Spanish international, in the sights of several big clubs in Europe for a year, could be the next 'bombshell' in the market for Bayern Munich.
According to 'BILD', the Bavarian team has added the '10' of Athletic to its list of wingers/attacking midfielders for the next summer market. The Bayern board already considers Florian Wirtz as lost, after his desire to play for Liverpool was leaked if, finally, Leverkusen gives the green light to his departure.
In that sense, names like Rafael Leao (AC Milan) and Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) have been mentioned at the Allianz Arena, but Nico, due to price and youth, seems a more sensible option. The Bavarians already have Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise and Harry Kane as offensive references, but prioritize adding another left winger.
Nico Williams, an ideal winger for Bayern Munich?
And it is that, most likely, the club will decide to get rid of Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, two forwards whose records have declined in recent months (both closed the season with 7 goals). The youngest of the Williams, however, did not have a great year with Athletic (11 goals and 7 assists in 45 games).
However, having an affordable clause (60 million euros) and a European Championship with Spain in his record give the player from Pamplona an advantage to become the next star signing of a Bayern that needs to shine again in Europe.
The team recovered the Bundesliga title after the arrival of Vincent Kompany, but fell in the quarterfinals of the Champions League against Inter Milan and has now gone five seasons without advancing to the final.
Nico Williams, for his part, reached the 'semis' in the Europa League with Athletic and, although the Basques will also be in the next Champions League, he feels that it is time to make the leap to a big club. In addition, his vertical game would adapt without problems to German football and to a Bavarian team accustomed to dominating its rivals.
Thus, with practically no options to sign for a Barça to which he preferred to close the door in 2024, the '10' from Bilbao will have to decide whether to try his luck in Germany or go to England, where Arsenal and Chelsea have been trying to close his signing for months.
