Ter Stegen is progressing well with his gym work and could be medically cleared in December. The German is the third option for Barça's goal, but for now he is not planning to listen to offers to leave in January
Marc-André ter Stegen's recovery with FC Barcelona could happen sooner than expected by the Barça medical team. The German was ruled out for a long period (4 months minimum) and should be out of action for the rest of 2025.
However, the goalkeeper believes he will be fit to play again in approximately one month, or at the latest, in early December this year. This is provided that his progress in the coming weeks continues to be optimal.
The Barça '1' has incorporated bike workouts to strengthen his physique into his daily gym routine. The captain underwent surgery at the end of June to treat, once again, lower back pain that already affected him at the end of 2023.
Then he was out for three months, from the end of November to mid-February 2024. In September of last year, 'Matts' suffered a serious injury to his right knee, after rupturing his patellar tendon. Although it was feared that he would be out for the rest of the 24/25 season, the goalkeeper was medically cleared at the end of April this year.
The Complex Scenario Awaiting Ter Stegen Upon His Return to Barça
In that sense, his evolution after suffering serious injuries caused an uncomfortable situation in the summer between Ter Stegen and Barça, finally resolved amicably with the signing of the '1' to the official medical report. The '1' insisted on being able to return, again, in less than 4 months, while the club prioritized his long-term absence to resolve the registration of Joan García.
Beyond the arrival of the Catalan goalkeeper and the subsequent renewal of Wojciech Szczesny, Marc-André believes that, once he receives medical clearance, he will fight again for the starting position in the Barça goal.

Hansi Flick, however, is already clear on his 1-2 in Barça's goal: Joan García will continue to be the starter when he returns from his meniscus injury in November, while 'Tek' will remain his substitute.
This will relegate Ter Stegen to a role that, in principle, is residual. For that reason, the club prioritizes resolving his departure, as his salary (around 14 million net) is a problem for the Azulgrana finances, even more so when the German has a current contract until 2028.
The dressing room, however, supports the goalkeeper, and the board does not intend to force his departure on bad terms, as the 33-year-old footballer has been a reference for the team in the last decade and agreed to renew in 2023 under the terms proposed by the club (deferring most of his salary to the final years of the contract).
Ter Stegen's position, for now, remains unchanged regarding the future
Beyond the complex scenario surrounding his future in Barcelona, Ter Stegen, for now, is only focused on fully overcoming his physical problems. The man from Mönchengladbach insists on staying to fight for the starting position, even knowing he is relegated and with the need to play to not risk his presence in the next World Cup.
Julian Nagelsmann counts on him as captain and starter, as long as he manages to be consistent in the second half of the 25/26 season. In his country, they insist that he accept an offer in the winter market, with a loan being the best alternative to facilitate his departure from Barça.
Several clubs in England, Italy, and other European leagues are attentive to his future, but the decision remains in the hands of the '1'. 'Matts' does not want to leave the Barça team through the back door, but in the medium and long term, clearly, the best thing for him is to look for another club.
