Ter Stegen's future at Barcelona could take an unexpected turn in January 2026. The German goalkeeper will need to find a team for the second half of the 25/26 season, and Girona is keeping an eye on his situation

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Marc-André ter Stegen seems to have his days numbered at Fútbol Club Barcelona. Beyond playing the full 90 minutes against Guadalajara in the Copa del Rey, the 33-year-old goalkeeper knows he is relegated in Hansi Flick's plans.

Given the possibility of spending a good part of the second half of the season on the bench, the Blaugrana's number 1 must find a team in the winter transfer window that opens on January 2nd

In this regard, the latest information points to Girona as one of the possible destinations for 'Matts' for the final stretch of 25/26. Míchel's team faces a complex situation in LaLiga, still in the relegation zone with only 15 points after 17 matchdays played.

The 'albirrojos' signed Croatian Dominik Livakovic last summer, but everything points to the goalkeeper returning to Fenerbahce in January due to his poor relationship with Míchel. The goalkeeper arrived on loan for one season, but has not even debuted in goal for Girona.

Girona's reasons for trying to sign Ter Stegen

Míchel himself revealed that Livakovic refused to play a Copa del Rey match, even when Paulo Gazzaniga, who has been the Catalan team's goalkeeper in recent seasons, had a fever and was unavailable. The Croatian has asked to leave and, with Vladyslav Krapivtsov (third goalkeeper) injured, the board would be forced to sign another goalkeeper.

Therefore, Ter Stegen's name has entered the radar of a Girona that, at the moment, has conceded 33 goals in 17 league matchdays. The team boasts the worst defense in the tournament, and 'Matts'' presence could be decisive in their attempt to avoid relegation.

Marc-André, for now, is unsure of his next team. What he is sure of is the need to play regularly, an objective almost impossible to achieve while he remains at Barça.

Joan García will remain the starter as long as he is healthy and Wojciech Szczesny will be his backup in any scenario the coaching staff requires him. The German still has a contract until June 2028, which is why he must go out on loan for six months, without a mandatory purchase option and with the Catalans assuming a majority percentage of his salary.

Unai Emery also wants Ter Stegen at Aston Villa

Although, in sporting terms, Girona's option doesn't seem the most attractive, Ter Stegen might view Montilivi's offer favorably to stay close to his family. The 33-year-old footballer feels very comfortable living in Barcelona and **his children still reside in the Catalan capital** with his ex-wife, from whom he separated at the beginning of 2025.

Outside of Spain, clubs like Besiktas have been closely monitoring the future of the Mönchengladbach player. In England, both City and United had him on their radar in the summer. More recently, Aston Villa has joined the list of 'suitors' for the German.

Unai Emery does not have a good relationship with Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez following the Argentine's failed attempt to sign for 'Manu U'. For this reason, the Spanish coach is looking for another experienced goalkeeper, and Ter Stegen would be one of his preferred options.

The Birmingham team are **third in the Premier League, 3 points behind Arsenal** and, in the Europa League, are very close to securing direct qualification for the round of 16. Will Emery be able to convince the Barça captain to pack his bags for England? In Germany, the pressure is immense on 'Matts', who will only start in the World Cup if he manages to arrive in good form by the summer.
