Everything seems to indicate that FC Barcelona will soon be saying goodbye to one of its young talents: Sergi Domínguez, who will apparently face his first adventure outside of Spain in the First Division with Dinamo Zagreb.

Sergi Domínguez in a match with Barça

This information was released by journalist Matteo Moretto, who asserted that Catalans and Croatians are in talks to finalize an agreement for the transfer of the defender. This agreement would be closed under the following conditions:

  1. Definitive transfer for €1.2 million.
  2. A future sale clause of 20%.
  3. Right of first refusal in case of a future sale.

Sergi Domínguez had little room in the first team

With this, the Catalan team would be getting rid of one of the youth players that Hansi Flick made his debut this season 2024/25 and who had some minutes of participation:

However, his space in the first team is clearly diminished by the surplus of defenders that the Barcelona team has, with up to five players of good level:

  1. Pau Cubarsí
  2. Iñigo Martínez
  3. Ronald Araujo
  4. Eric García
  5. Andreas Christensen

The opportunity to grow at Dinamo Zagreb

Moving now to Dinamo Zagreb, which presumably will sign him for a four-season contract —that is, until 2029—, could represent an important leap in his professional career. Given the few options he had to see action with the first team, his permanence in the 'Azulgrana' team did not seem too viable.

His opportunities were summarized, in the best of cases, to play in Barça Atlètic, as he did mostly during the 2024/25 season. But, there is the negative point that the 'culé' subsidiary was relegated to Segunda RFEF, which represents a drop in the competitive level.

This has already led to the departure of several young talents such as:

  1. Hugo Alba - OFK Belgrade.
  2. Aleix Garrido - Elche.
  3. Diego Percan - Arka Gdynia.
  4. Arnau Pradas.

A strategic sale that maintains control of the player

Under this premise, the operation acquires special economic viability for Barcelona, which would be obtaining a net income for a youth player. Following the effective formula of other past sales, the club maintains some control over the player through clauses that could allow it to take future advantage, as happened with cases such as:

  1. €8 million for the transfer of Jean-Clair Todibo to West Ham, from OGC Nice.
  2. €6 million after the effective purchase of Alex Valle by Como.
  3. €600,000 for Ilaix Moriba and his transfer to Celta de Vigo.
  4. €400,000 now for Álex Collado.
  5. €50,000 for the transfer of Ferran Jutglà from Club Brugge to Celta de Vigo.

Will Sergi Domínguez succeed away from Barça?

Now it remains to be seen whether Sergi Domínguez, widely valued in the institution for being a defender with very good ball output, corrective capacity and a notable aerial game both offensively and defensively, manages to succeed outside of Barcelona and adapts correctly to the demands of First Division football. Will he succeed? Time will tell.
