The president of the RFEF, Rafael Louzán, spoke about Real Madrid's controversial refusal and the club assured that it will not renounce the Copa final. Find out everything!

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Real Madrid's embarrassing refusal to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) keeps the dispute of the Copa del Rey final this Saturday in La Cartuja in doubt. Regarding the possibility of the 'merengue' team abandoning before the Clásico against FC Barcelona, Rafael Louzán stepped out to the controversy after speaking with the board of directors of the 'Casa Blanca'.

Before the official dinner between boards of directors, an event that Madrid decided not to attend, the president made clear his position on the scandal. Regarding the designation of the referees of the match, Louzán clarified that this depends, exclusively, on the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA).

The previous press conference starring Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea (main) and Pablo González Fuertes (VAR) unleashed the Madrid fury due to the claims of the referees to the reports issued by the club's channel, 'RMTV'.

Louzán asks Florentino Pérez and Madrid to "appeal to common sense"

"I am president of the RFEF, this depends on the CTA, I am not going to enter into that issue and today we have to enjoy. We have been working for many days, a long time, there are thousands of fans in Seville and millions of people around the world," the leader began by saying.

In that sense, he added: "I appeal to responsibility so that all this goes well. We have this city, with the Board, the City Council, the Provincial Council... so that everything goes well", this in statements collected by the newspaper 'SPORT'.

In addition, Louzán was clear in his call to Florentino Pérez and Real Madrid regarding setting aside their claims "I appeal to common sense and responsibility. I hope that tomorrow we will see a great game, which is the important thing. I have already spoken with who I had to speak with," the president pointed out.

The RFEF trusts that the Barça-Madrid can be played this Saturday

Thus, the RFEF trusts that everything that happened during Friday will be anecdotal and the Clásico can be played normally in La Cartuja, starting at 10:00 p.m. Madrid suspended the press conference prior to the match and the photo session between the captains and coaches of both clubs.

However, beyond the arbitration claims, the 'merengue' team knows very well the punishments to which it is exposed in case of not playing the Copa final. More than 30,000 Madrid fans are already in Seville to support their team, while a larger number of Barça fans have done the same since last Thursday.

Real Madrid rules out abandoning the Copa final... For now

After issuing a first statement reiterating its indignation at the complaints of De Burgos Bengoetxea and González Fuertes, the 'Casa Blanca sent another statement to deny the rumors about its possible withdrawal from the Copa final.

This is what the latest statement published on the official website of the 'merengue' team says:

"In view of the rumors that have arisen in recent hours, Real Madrid C. F. communicates that our team has never considered giving up playing tomorrow's final.

Our club understands that the unfortunate and inappropriate statements of the referees appointed for this match, made 24 hours before the final, cannot tarnish a sporting event of global importance that will be watched by hundreds of millions of people and out of respect also to all the fans who have planned their trip to Seville, and to all those who are already in the Andalusian capital.

Real Madrid understands that the values of football must prevail, despite the hostility and animosity that have been manifested today, once again against our club, by these referees appointed for the final."

Real Sociedad would play the Copa final with Barça if Madrid abandons

Another robbery: a goal from Real Madrid was born from a scandalous offside
One of Real Madrid's goals in the second leg of the Copa del Rey 'semis' against Real Sociedad (4-4).

According to the sanctions established in the General Regulations and the Disciplinary Code of the RFEF, Real Madrid would face the following punishments in case of not appearing on Saturday at the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.

In addition, the azulgrana team would have to play the final on a new date against Real Sociedad, as established by article 80 of the Disciplinary Code of the RFEF.

The sports sanctions that Madrid would suffer if they do not play the Copa final

  • The team that does not show up for a Copa del Rey match automatically loses the match and, being a knockout competition, is eliminated from the tournament.
  • If the abandonment occurs in the final match, it will be played between the other finalist (Barça) and the one that was eliminated by the offender (Real Sociedad). In any case, the non-appearing or withdrawn team may not participate in the next edition of the tournament.
  • In addition, the regulations establish that the offending team may not participate in the next edition of the Copa del Rey

The economic sanctions that Madrid would suffer if they do not play the Copa final

  • An economic fine is imposed on the offending club. The general scale ranges between 3,006 and 12,021 euros, depending on the category and circumstances of the club.
  • For teams in the First or Second Division, the economic sanction is usually between 6,001 and 9,000 euros; for teams in the Second B, between 3,001 and 6,000 euros.
  • If the non-appearing team is a visitor, it also has the obligation to compensate the local team for the damages caused.

These sanctions are applied unless there are duly justified and accepted force majeure causes by the disciplinary bodies. In the case of the final in La Cartuja, Real Madrid lacks legal arguments to justify its refusal.
