Hansi Flick's men will travel to Lisbon to face the Portuguese side with the aim of continuing their positive momentum in Europe

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Benfica and FC Barcelona are two clubs with a long track record in the Champions League. In fact, both have won the trophy, the Portuguese side twice (1960/1961 and 1961/1962) and the Catalans five times (1991/1992, 2005/2006, 2008/2009, 2010/2011, 2014/2015). The Lisbon-based team also won its first Champions League trophy against the Catalans of Kubala and Luis Suárez.

They have faced each other a total of 9 times in the Champions League, with 3 victories for the Blaugrana, 4 draws and 2 wins for the Benfica team. This Tuesday they will face each other at the Estádio da Luz and it will be the tenth meeting in the history of the competition. Focusing on the matches played on Portuguese territory, the history is very even, with one victory for each team and two draws. At the scene of this clash, they fought in the following seasons:

  1. 1991/1992 season, third round: SL Benfica 0-0 FC Barcelona
  2. 2005/2006 season, quarter-finals: SL Benfica 0-0 FC Barcelona
  3. 2012/2013 season, group stage: SL Benfica 0-2 FC Barcelona
  4. 2021/2022 season, group stage: SL Benfica 3-0 FC Barcelona

The most direct precedent

FC Barcelona's last visit to the Estádio da Luz was one of the most eventful. It was the second day of the Champions League group stage, a round in which the Catalans shared a stay with Bayern, Benfica and Dynamo kyiv. After conceding a 0-3 against the German team in their European debut, the Blaugranas travelled to Lisbon to turn things around.

Ronald Koeman's pupils started with the following eleven: Ter Stegen; Eric García, Piqué, Araujo; Sergi Roberto, Busquets, Frenkie de Jong, Dest; Pedri; Memphis and Luuk de Jong. They soon took the first blow, as a great individual play by Darwin Núñez served to open the scoring in the 3rd minute. Although the Catalans had opportunities to equalise, parity never came. Rafa Silva in the 69th took advantage of a rebound from Ter Stegen and, in the final moments, the one who opened the scoring closed it from the eleven metres.

Barça left Lisbon with a painful 0-3 that scared their fans. Despite the fact that the next two games were victories against Dynamo Kiev (1-0 and 0-1), a draw at home against Benfica forced the Catalans to beat their black beast in Munich. Far from that happening, the German team scored another trio of goals and sent the Catalan club to the Europa League.

In a completely different dynamic, Barça will visit the Estádio da Luz this Tuesday. Despite the stumble in La Liga against Getafe (1-1), the objective is to maintain the good feelings with which it started 2025. Likewise, the European streak is very good this season, as it is all victories except for the first match, against Monaco, which was the first defeat of the Flick era. If Liverpool (1st) falls defeated by Lille and the Catalans beat their opponent, there will be a new leader in the Champions League.
