After the match against FC Seoul, Frenkie de Jong reassured the Blaugrana fans by commenting that he will renew with Barça. He also defended Ter Stegen's captaincy
After the second preseason match of FC Barcelona that took place in South Korea against FC Seoul, where the Blaugrana swept with a 3-7, Frenkie de Jong gave statements that cleared any doubt about his renewal, in addition to defending the captaincy of Marc-André ter Stegen.
The player gave some brief but revealing words, which mark a turning point in his relationship with the Blaugrana team, since, before the 2024/25 season, the possibility of a contract extension for the Dutch midfielder seemed distant.
"I am very happy at Barça, as far as I know Barça is happy with me and, in the end, I am going to renew," the player pointed out.
In this way, the '21' of the Barcelona team takes his renewal for granted, which until now would not have been finalized because he is in the process of separating from his agent, Ali Dursun.
Frenkie de Jong, a fundamental piece in Flick's scheme
The Dutch midfielder is probably going through one of his best moments as in Barça, as coach Hansi Flick placed his trust in him and would see him as an 'untouchable' player.
Likewise, he closed the 2024/25 season, being one of the references in the midfield area, since when physical problems allowed him to be 100%, he was able to snatch the starting position from Marc Casadó.
The player closed the last season seeing action in 46 matches (2,488 minutes), in addition to scoring 2 goals and assisting in 2 opportunities in a Barcelona that won La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.
That's how things are for Frenkie, who landed at Camp Barça in the summer of 2019, coming from Ajax in exchange for 75 million fixed euros. Now, in case of renewing, which is expected to be for two more seasons with an optional one (until 2029), the player would complete a decade being part of the Catalan team, since he still has one year left on his contract (2025/26 season).
Ter Stegen in the spotlight? De Jong responds forcefully
In this context, between Barça and the team's first captain, Marc-André ter Stegen, there has been tension after the German goalkeeper confirmed that he would undergo surgery to solve some ailments in his back, giving an estimated three months off.
This did not sit well within the club, which considers that 'MATS' should not have taken on the task of saying how long he would be away from the field, in addition to the fact that Barcelona recommended him to make a joint statement, something that the goalkeeper overlooked after releasing his at least an hour earlier.
Therefore, information emerged indicating that both the club's board and Flick would be evaluating removing his captaincy, since they consider that there must be a bridge between the first team, the top management of the institution and the technical staff, something that until now would not be happening due to the alleged distancing between the captain and the entity.
Faced with this, Frenkie de Jong, when asked, was clear, arguing that for him Marc is the captain, in addition to highlighting that he is a world-class goalkeeper.
"For me, Marc is the captain of the team, as he has been last season. Marc is a world-class player and has always given his best to the club and so I support Marc a lot and, as far as I know, the team too," he said.
It should be remembered that the native of Mönchengladbach, apparently, did not like the hiring of Joan García and the subsequent renewal of Wojciech Szczęsny. This situation would be placing him as the third guardian of the culé goal, when in the last nine years he has been the '1'.
