Ter Stegen must have continuity at Barça to be Germany's starting goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup. However, Joan García and Szczęsny are ahead of him
Marc-André ter Stegen's stay at FC Barcelona has not been comfortable these last few days. From differences with the club to comments from the German coach, Julian Nagelsmann, have made the German goalkeeper the target of information.
In this sense, the coach of 'Die Mannschaft' has been forceful in recent statements. If 'MATS' aspires to be a starter in the next World Cup, he must add minutes regularly at his club. The warning, direct and with its own name, has not gone unnoticed either in the goalkeeper's environment or in the offices of the Blaugrana team.
"If Marc returns to be the starting goalkeeper for his club, he could certainly be our first goalkeeper, because he deserves it," Nagelsmann said at the International Coaches Congress in Leipzig.
However, he gave way to speculation, as he also revealed that there is now another goalkeeper who will play while Ter Stegen, who has just undergone surgery for some ailments in his back, is unavailable, but he did not reveal his name.
Will Ter Stegen look for a way out of Barça in winter?
The situation of 'MATS' in Barcelona is complex. In principle, the player starts as the third option to defend the Culé goal, being behind Joan García and Wojciech Szczęsny.
That custom of seeing the native goalkeeper from Mönchengladbach as the undisputed starter for the Blaugrana team seems to have been left far behind, something that he seems to be having a hard time processing.
This situation disorients Marc-André, whose priority is to reach the World Cup that will be held in North America in 2026, so it remains to be seen whether he will consider leaving Barcelona during the winter market, because, in addition to already receiving the direct message from Nagelsmann, he will also have to decide if he wants to close his stage as a Blaugrana away from the spotlight.
Barcelona would like to let the player leave, since he earns around 7 million euros net per season and needs to continue freeing up salary mass to get closer to the 1:1 rule and that LaLiga cannot put obstacles with future incorporations or pending registrations.
The starting position with Germany as a measure of pressure for Ter Stegen
The pressure on the goalkeeper does not only come from Barça, but Nagelsmann was in charge of making him understand that everything is subject to his role in the Blaugrana team after his recovery, always considering the position of goalkeeper of Germany for the World Cup.
“After the rehabilitation period, he should participate in the club again and be number one there, so I'll see,” he added.
Likewise, at Barça, although they are very grateful for the work of 'MATS', they believe that there is no room for sentimentality and that the best thing is for him to end up leaving the club.
The Catalan team did not indicate the length of the 33-year-old player's absence, but it is expected that he will be away from the field for between four and five months. However, before undergoing surgery, the goalkeeper estimated that he would be out for three months, something that annoyed the club.
