Szczęsny spoke about his possible renewal with FC Barcelona and revealed the key factor that will define whether or not he continues at the club.
If there is one name that seems to have earned his renewal with FC Barcelona, it is Wojciech Szczęsny. The 35-year-old Polish goalkeeper responded to the call from Barcelona after the serious injury of Marc-André ter Stegen (complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee), who was out of action for at least seven months.
'Tek' came out of retirement, which he had officially announced just a few weeks earlier, and put on the Barça shirt to face a new adventure in the First Division, the fourth of his career (after his time at clubs such as Arsenal, AS Roma and Juventus), helping the club to get out of a very difficult moment.
Szczęsny's season with Barcelona: Performance that has exceeded expectations
After his official debut in the 3rd round of the Copa del Rey against UD Barbastro (0-4), Szczęsny has shown why his incorporation - even after retiring - was a successful decision. Beyond his experience, the Pole has provided security between the posts, achieving an impeccable unbeaten streak and numbers that reinforce his role as a starter, despite the medical discharge of Ter Stegen.
Szczęsny's current statistics with FC Barcelona:
- 29 games played
- 36 goals conceded
- 13 clean sheets
Given 'Tek's' season with the Catalan team, it is not surprising that the club has offered him a well-deserved contract extension beyond June 30, the date on which his current contract expires. However, the big question mark revolves around his willingness to continue in the elite of professional football.
Szczęsny talks about his renewal and the key factor to continue at Barça
After the Clásico against Real Madrid (4-3), in which he was seen emotional after the victory and comeback of Barcelona, Szczęsny spoke with Canal Plus Poland about his situation: "I don't hide that I have an offer to continue at Barça for two more years. They have already presented it to me, but I have asked for time. I need to decide with my family what is best for all of us," explained the veteran goalkeeper.

In turn, Szczęsny made it clear that the decision does not depend only on him: "I owe it to my wife to decide this together and we have not done it yet. Most of the decisions are made by my wife and I am not ashamed of it at all. I used to decide about football as a professional, but this is an unusual case. We were all determined that he would come for a year to fulfill our dreams and then go back to playing golf."
"We were all determined that he would come for a year to fulfill our dreams and then go back to playing golf."
The Polish goalkeeper concluded by detailing that the resolution will come soon: "The truth is that I don't know what will happen and I am sincere about it. We are going to decide this month because we have to set up all the logistics in terms of school or moving depends on what we decide. Right now there is nothing firm and we are thinking about it."
Szczęsny's renewal and its impact on Iñaki Peña's future at Barcelona
Szczęsny's decision could also have repercussions for Iñaki Peña, who has a contract with Barça until June 2026. The goalkeeper from Alicante could see his future conditioned depending on whether he becomes the second or third goalkeeper next season. A key choice that could even motivate his departure in the next summer market.
