The Barça Legends were held scoreless in Argentina. The Barça Legends played a friendly match in Buenos Aires against River Plate. With several notable absences, the 'culés' fell at the Monumental (2-0).
The FC Barcelona legends team visited the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires to face the Argentinian River Plate. Albert Ferrer's team, this time, could not secure the victory in the renovated field of a 'millionaire' team that won convincingly (2-0) with goals from Alejandro 'Chori' Domínguez and Ariel 'Burrito' Ortega.
The Barça Legends took to the Antonio Vespucio Liberti field with Angoy in goal and a line of three central defenders made up of Sergi, Christanval and Frank de Boer. Further ahead were Fernando Navarro and Sorín, along with Edmílson, Cocu and Mendieta. As area references were Gerard and Giovanni.
River, for their part, put Barovero in goal, with Franco, Maidana, Rivarola and Abelairas at the back. In midfield were Ponzio, Domingo and Domínguez, while the offensive trident was made up of Mora, Ortega and Cavenaghi, the latter only on the field for the first half hour of play.
The absences weighed heavily on the Barça Legends
Without stars like Xavi, Iniesta or Ronaldinho, the Barça Legends lacked depth in attack. In the 9th minute, a bad pass from Navarro to Angoy forced the 'culé' goalkeeper to clear short. The ball fell to 'Chori' Domínguez, who, seeing the goalkeeper out of position, lobbed the ball into the back of the net.
The 'culés' took possession, but found it difficult to find Gerard and Giovanni, their references in the rival area. The locals, for their part, tried to hurt on the counter-attack, although the pace of the match was not intense.
After the break, the introduction of Nolito and Valiente for the attacking duo gave more danger to each 'azulgrana' incursion. Marc Valiente, with a header, had the clearest chance for the Catalans after a cross from Cocu that demanded Marcelo Barovero.
However, River extended the lead with a penalty from Mendieta on Ortega, who, true to his style, fell spectacularly to convince the main referee to sanction the foul inside the area. Vitor Baia had replaced Angoy in goal, but did not guess the side chosen by the 'Burrito' and, in 67 minutes, the score was settled.
What will be the next match for the Barça Legends?
After the defeat in Argentina, the team led by Albert Ferrer will travel to Mexico to face Tigres. The match will be played on August 31 (Sunday) at the Estadio Universitario, better known as 'El Volcán', owned by the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL).
For this match, the participation of figures such as Andrés Iniesta, David Villa, Edgar Davids and Rafa Márquez, former coach of Barça Atlètic and current assistant coach of Javier Aguirre in the Mexican national team, is confirmed.
Against River, the participation of Javier Saviola was expected, but finally the 'Conejo' could not arrive due to schedule reasons. Initially, the match at the Monumental was scheduled for June 5. With this match, the team closes the 24/25 after touring Brazil, Qatar, Japan, Puerto Rico, India, Mexico and Georgia.
