Barça and Madrid define the Liga title this Sunday. Despite the 'culé' dominance in 24/25, in Liga, the recent history in Catalunya favors the 'blancos'

Calendar of FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid face each other this Sunday in matchday 35 of LaLiga EA Sports 2024/25. With the title at stake, four matchdays before the end of the season, Hansi Flick's team arrives with a 4-point advantage and the possibility of sealing the tournament at home.

However, the recent history on Catalan soil has not been favorable to the 'culés'. In their last five appearances as locals in the Clásico, Barça has only been able to win one match in 2023.

For now, the record in official matches is 105-103 favorable to the 'blancos' after 260 encounters in which 52 draws are recorded. In 2024/25, however, Barça has won the three Clásicos played with a remarkable global of 12 goals in favor and only 4 against.

Next, we review how the last five Liga Clásicos in Barcelona were, four played at the Spotify Camp Nou and only one at the Lluís Companys de Montjuïc, venue for Sunday's match at 16:15 CEST.

❌Undeserved defeat in the first Clásico in Montjuïc

In their last home match against the 'merengues', Barça fell by the minimum (1-2). It was on matchday 11 of 23/24, when Xavi Hernández's team let slip a match they had clearly dominated until the 65th minute.

Ílkay Gündogan put the Blaugrana team ahead in the 6th minute, but a double from Jude Bellingham in the 68th and 90+2 minutes gave the victory to the 'blancos'. In the end, Madrid would win that Liga comfortably.

🏆Franck Kessié, the hero of a victory that was worth half a Liga

In 22/23, Barça did their homework with a minimal victory (2-1) that paved the way for their 27th Liga title. On matchday 26, Xavi's team started losing due to an own goal by Ronald Araujo in the 9th minute.

However, the 'culés' came back thanks to goals from Sergi Roberto, in the 45th minute, and Franck Kessié, in the second minute of added time. This was the last Clásico at Camp Nou before its remodeling.

🔴Another defeat at the last minute in the first Barça-Madrid post-pandemic

A season earlier, in 21/22, Madrid won another match without deserving it at a Camp Nou that was receiving public again after more than a year and a half closed due to the covid-19 pandemic.

On matchday 10, Carlo Ancelotti's team won 1-2 with goals from David Alaba and Lucas Vázquez in the 32nd and 90th minutes. At the end, Sergio 'Kun' Agüero scored for the 'azulgrana' team, scoring his only goal as a 'culé'.

Ronald Koeman was still the coach of Barça and would be sacked a couple of weeks later. In the second round, Barça crushed Madrid at the Bernabéu (0-4), but the 'blancos' kept the title.

🥅Madrid took advantage in an empty Camp Nou

In the first Clásico without public due to the pandemic, Real Madrid surprised Barcelona (1-3) with goals from Fede Valverde, Sergio Ramos (from a penalty) and Luka Modric.

Ansu Fati, in the 8th minute, had scored the partial 1-1 at the beginning of the match. That Liga stayed in the showcases of Atlético de Madrid, with the 'culés' celebrating the Copa del Rey. Zinedine Zidane's team won nothing and the Frenchman was sacked.

🟡First goalless draw since 2002

In 2019/20, Barça and Madrid faced each other on matchday 10 and, for the first time since 2022/03, the match ended in a goalless draw (0-0). Ernesto Valverde was still the 'azulgrana' coach, a position he would leave in January 2020.

Madrid, with Zidane on the bench, ended up keeping the title in July, after the three-month break due to confinement. The refereeing help and the punctures of Quique Setién's Barça led to the 'merengue' coronation.
