Barça lost against Villarreal (2-3) their first League match this 2025. The 'culés' ended an unbeaten run of 17 matchdays
FC Barcelona closed their stay in Montjuïc in 2024/25 with an inconsequential defeat against Villarreal (2-3). The team led by Hansi Flick lost their first match in the second round of LaLiga EA Sports with the title already decided, after beating Espanyol in the previous matchday (0-2).
Despite this, the coach lined up the best possible team, with a majority of starters to maintain the unbeaten run in the League this 2025. However, the 'culé' defense conceded an early goal again (Ayoze made it 0-1 in the 4th minute) and, although the team went into halftime with an advantage, they failed to sustain the result in the second half.
In the end, goals from Santiago Comesaña and Tajon Buchanan allowed the 'Yellow Submarine' to take three points from Montjuïc, securing third place and, with it, their direct passage to the next Champions League.
Barça, despite the defeat, celebrated the League title in style after the match, receiving the champion's trophy. The 'azulgrana' team was, by far, the best in the tournament, with 85 points, 99 goals in favor and victories against 18 of the 19 rivals they faced. Only Betis (two draws) avoided falling against the 'culés'.
❌Flick's Barça breaks an unbeaten run of 17 matchdays in LaLiga
For Flick's team, the defeat against Villarreal was the first in the entire second round, where the team accumulated 15 victories and 2 draws in 17 appearances. Getafe and Betis (both 1-1) had been the only ones capable of taking points from the Catalans this 2025.
Thus, Barça lost again 17 matchdays and 147 days later, again at home in Montjuïc. The 'culés' last lost on matchday 18, against Atlético (1-2) on December 21, 2024.
Hansi Flick himself admitted that this match was the turning point in the season, as it was the third consecutive defeat at home despite having played very well. The squad returned in January with renewed energy and managed to win the national treble (League, Cup and Super Cup), in addition to crushing Real Madrid in the four Clásicos played.
Despite the defeat against Villarreal, the Catalans can still match their best second round in history (16 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat), something they had only achieved in 2009/10, with Pep Guardiola on the bench.
To do this, Flick's team will have to win next week in Bilbao against an Athletic team that has already secured its participation in the next Champions League and the 2025 European Super Cup.

📊Barça says goodbye to Montjuïc with a positive balance

For Barça, Sunday's was the fourth defeat of the season at the Lluís Companys. In their second season away from the Spotify Camp Nou due to the remodeling of the 'culé' temple, the 'culés' added 14 wins, 1 draw and 4 defeats (43 points), 3 units less than they obtained in 23/24 with Xavi Hernández on the bench.
The difference was in the away performance. The team has 13 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats in 18 appearances (42 points), while last season Barcelona drew 6 matches and lost in another 2 as a visitor, with 39 points.
Thus, the 'azulgrana' team says goodbye to Montjuïc with a balance of 29 wins, 2 draws and 7 defeats in 38 matches. After a season without titles, 24/25 closes with the national treble and a solid base for 25/26, when the team returns to the 'Culé' Temple.
In principle, Flick's team will play the first three matchdays of the League as a visitor to give an extra month to the progress of the works. The capacity of the Camp Nou next season will be 65,000 spectators, waiting to complete the third tier and install the roof in the summer of 2026.
