Marcelino García's Villarreal is the new leader of LaLiga EA Sports 2025/26 on matchday 2, thanks to a resounding 'manita' over Girona (5-0). The Castellonians, although they have the same points as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, have a better goal difference.

Villarreal's thrashing was resolved very early at the Estadio de La Cerámica. Nicolas Pépé opened the scoring in the 7th minute and a double by Tanon Buchanan, along with another goal by Rafael Martín, put the score at 4-0 in just 28 minutes. In the second half, another goal from Buchanan closed the beating of the Catalans.

Real Madrid's controversial thrashing in Asturias

Real Madrid, for their part, did their homework in Asturias against Real Oviedo (0-3). A double by Kylian Mbappé and another goal by Vinicius Jr. at the end settled a match conditioned by two controversial decisions by the main referee Ricardo De Burgos.

The Basque judge did not sanction a possible foul by Tchouaméni on Ilic prior to Mbappé's first goal. In addition, he spared Vini from being sent off (for a second yellow card) in the final stretch of the match.

With this result, the Whites also have 6 points and equal Barça's line with a goal difference of +4. The 'Culés', however, retain second place having scored a couple more goals (6).

Barça maintained the perfect pace thanks to the comeback in Levante

Barça went into halftime down by two goals after goals from Iván Romero and José Morales, the latter from penalty after a non-existent handball by Alejando Balde inside the area. The main referee Alejandro Hernández and the person in charge of VAR, Jorge Figueroa, pointed out the penalty after reviewing the play in added time.

In the second half, the team led by Hansi Flick reacted with a great goal from Pedri in the 49th minute. Three minutes later, Ferran Torres made it 2-2 and, in the 90+1 minute, a 'poisoned' cross from Lamine Yamal ended in an own goal by Unai Elgezabal to close the comeback.

In this way, Barça maintain the perfect score in the tournament (6 points out of 6 possible), tied with Villarreal and Real Madrid, although with a goal difference of +4, after scoring 6 goals and conceding 2.

Osasuna added their first victory of the season, Atlético does not react

Matchday 2 began on Friday with Betis' victory against Alavés (1-0). A goal from Giovani Lo Celso allowed the 'Verdiblancos' to add their first victory, with which they reach 4 points. The Vitorians, on the other hand, remain with 3 units after defeating Levante last week.

On Saturday, first thing in the morning, Mallorca and Celta drew at Son Moix (1-1), this being the first point for both teams. The same happened with Atlético de Madrid, who barely rescued a draw at home against Elche (1-1).

The Elche team started losing with a goal from Alexander Sorloth in the 8th minute, but quickly equalized thanks to Rafa Mir when only the initial quarter of an hour had passed. Despite their enormous investment in reinforcements, the 'Colchoneros' have not yet won in the tournament, since on matchday 1 they fell against Espanyol (2-1).

Elche, for their part, have two draws (Betis and Atlético). The Saturday matchday closed with Barça's comeback against Levante (2-3). On Sunday, Osasuna added their first victory against Valencia (1-0), thanks to a goal from Ante Budimir in the 9th minute.

Real Sociedad and Espanyol, meanwhile, drew 2-2 in San Sebastián, while Villarreal crushed a falling Girona side. Monday's matchday closed with narrow wins for Athletic Bilbao and Getafe against Rayo Vallecano (1-0) and Sevilla (1-2), respectively. The Basques and the 'azulones' also reached six points.
