Mondays of FC Barcelona in LaLiga: statistics that will leave you speechless

LaLiga closes this Monday with FC Barcelona hosting Rayo at Montjuïc (21:00 hours). This will be the tenth match in the last 15 years for the azulgrana team on an unusual day for the culé calendar. Enjoying two free weeks due to the UEFA Champions League 'play-off' has given Hansi Flick's team a breather, and the league has scheduled their match against the Vallecas team on a Monday, which has historically been favorable for the Catalans.

Since 2010, the record in the nine previous matches played at the beginning of the week is 6 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss. Interestingly, all matches have been at the azulgrana's home ground, seven at Camp Nou and two at Montjuïc. The first precedent dates back to the 2010/11 season, with the 'manita' against Real Madrid in matchday 13 (5-0). Xavi Hernández, Pedro Rodríguez, David Villa (double), and Jefren Suárez scored the goals in the historic rout against José Mourinho's team.

A year later, Villarreal suffered the same result in matchday 5 (5-0). On that day, Thiago Alcántara, Cesc Fàbregas, Alexis Sánchez, and Leo Messi scored twice. After the two 'manitas' with Pep Guardiola on the bench, Barça went almost a decade without playing on a Monday in LaLiga, until the 2020/21 season.

The Barça record on Mondays in LaLiga: just one loss in 15 years

In the 2021/22 season, there were two home matches on a Monday. Still with Ronald Koeman on the bench, in matchday 5, Barça salvaged a point at home against Granada (1-1) thanks to a goal from Ronald Araujo in the 90th minute. The Dutch coach was dismissed after losing to Rayo in Vallecas (1-0) in matchday 11. Later, with Xavi Hernández on the bench, the azulgrana team would fall to Cádiz at Camp Nou (0-1) in matchday 32, due to a goal from Lucas Pérez in the 48th minute.

That has been the only defeat for Barcelona on a Monday in LaLiga in the last 15 years. In the 2022/23 season, already with the title within reach, the culés drew with Girona (0-0) in matchday 28. Ansu Fati, Raphinha, and Lewandowski formed the starting azulgrana trio. In the second half, Ferran Torres came on, but Girona managed to keep their goal intact. 

Barça will play on a Monday in Montjuïc for the third time since 2023

Last season, in the final stretch of the tournament, the Catalans played two matches in Montjuïc on a Monday, both resulting in azulgrana victories. The first was in matchday 33, against Valencia (4-2). The team came off two tough defeats, against PSG in Champions (1-4) and Real Madrid in LaLiga (3-2), but bounced back with a rout in which Fermín López and Robert Lewandowski (hat-trick) scored.

Later, on matchday 35, on May 13, 2024, Barça defeated Real Sociedad (2-0) thanks to goals from Lamine Yamal in the 40th minute and Raphinha in the third minute of added time, from a penalty. The team led by Xavi Hernández managed to recover the second position, which had been held by Girona for a good part of the championship won by Real Madrid.
