Eliminations, full of defeats against FC Barcelona and a change of cycle: radiography of the Real Madrid crisis in the 2024/25 season
The very tough thrashing by 4-3 that FC Barcelona inflicted on Real Madrid in this Sunday's league Clásico was probably the final straw to crown one of the most misguided and apathetic seasons of the white team in the last 10 years. The culmination of the cycle for Carlo Ancelotti, is coming in the most catastrophic way possible, with a team that has lost practically everything it had at stake.
The expectations of Real Madrid were very high, especially with the arrival of its stellar and millionaire incorporation, Kylian Mbappé. However, so far, the only award he has been able to win is the European Super Cup, after beating Atalanta 2-0 at the National Stadium in Warsaw. Since then, every competition he aspired to ended in disappointment.
FC Barcelona: their main executioner
Paradoxically, FC Barcelona has been the great executioner of Real Madrid this season. Not only did they win in all the Clásicos played, setting a historic record, but they also left them out of combat in two finals: the Spanish Super Cup (culé victory 2-5 in Arabia) and the Copa del Rey (Blaugrana triumph 3-2 in La Cartuja). In turn, barring an unexpected turn, they will also snatch the LaLiga EA Sports title.
| COMPETITION | MATCHES | VICTORIES | DRAWS | DEFEATS | GOALS IN FAVOR | GOALS AGAINST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LaLiga EA Sports | 35 | 23 | 6 | 6 | 72 | 37 |
| UEFA Champions League | 14 | 9 | - | 5 | 33 | 24 |
| Copa del Rey | 6 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 20 | 11 |
| Supercopa de España | 2 | 1 | - | 1 | 5 | 5 |
| European Super Cup | 1 | 1 | - | - | 2 | 0 |
| TOTAL: | 58 | 39 | 7 | 13 | 132 | 77 |
Resounding failure in the Champions League
Another hard blow came in the UEFA Champions League, where the white team was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Arsenal destroyed them with a global score of 5-1, after a 3-0 in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium and a 2-1 in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. An unthinkable score for a team that had just won the competition and is always a candidate for the title. Faced with this, the Club World Cup is presented as the last opportunity to make up for the season, although the prospects are not encouraging either.
A disappointing campaign that has marked the resounding closure in the sports project of Carlo Ancelotti, whose continuity has been ruled out as it has been made official that the Italian coach will take the reins of the Brazilian national team. A movement that gives way to the beginning of a new sports project in Chamartín, which everything points to will be commanded by Xabi Alonso.
The numbers that confirm Real Madrid's disastrous 2024-25 season
The slump of Real Madrid is not just a perception. The defeat against Barcelona (4-3) was number 13 in the season, adding all the competitions. It is a very negative record compared to last year, where they only lost two matches. Likewise, it is their second worst record of defeats in the last ten seasons, only surpassed by the 18 setbacks of the 2018-19 season.

Meanwhile, Barcelona smiles
While Real Madrid is experiencing one of its worst recent seasons, FC Barcelona is going through a great moment. Under the guidance of Hansi Flick, the culé team has already conquered the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, and continues in the fight for the LaLiga title. With a young and talented squad, the future looks promising for the Blaugrana, who seem to have started a new winning cycle.
