The Spanish Super Cup will undergo significant changes in its 43rd edition, which is scheduled to be played in early 2027. Although the format will be the same as in the last seven years, there will be a new venue and date for the tournament

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is working on important changes for the next edition of the Spanish Super Cup. The tournament was supposed to be played again in Arabia, as there is a current contract until 2029 to continue playing the tournament there for three more editions.

However, **the dispute for the 2027 Asia Cup, from January 7 to February 5 of next year**, forces the RFEF to negotiate an alternative venue and date for the 43rd edition of the tournament. Several options are already being considered, but what is certain is that the tournament will not be played in Spain and will maintain its current format intact.

Barring a surprise, **FC Barcelona and Real Madrid** will once again be contenders for the title, awaiting confirmation of the finalists for the Copa del Rey and the champion and runner-up of LaLiga this season.

In 24/25, Barça and Madrid finished 1-2 in both tournaments, meaning Atlético de Madrid and Athletic, as third and fourth in the league, went to the Super Cup. Conversely, in 23/24, Athletic and Mallorca secured their trip to Arabia as Copa champions and runners-up, respectively.

Qatar emerges as host of the 2027 Spanish Super Cup

Regarding the venue for the next Supercopa, the president of the RFEF, Rafael Louzán, assured that the staging of the Finalissima on March 27 between Spain and Argentina at the Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar, opens the door for the 2022 World Cup venue to host the Spanish tournament.

"Next year the Asian Cup will be played in Saudi Arabia, so the Spanish Super Cup cannot be held. For 2027, one of the possibilities is Qatar," warned Louzán, who also defended the current agreement with the Saudi government.

"This provides a necessary projection. Arabia likes Spanish football and brings an economic boost to modest Spanish football. More than 600 teams in Spain benefit from this agreement"

The next Super Cup could be played in February

In addition to the venue, another change for the 43rd edition of the Spanish Super Cup has to do with the date it will be played. In the last five editions, it has been played in the second week of January, between the 7th and the 14th. For 2027, the option to push the calendar back a week, from January 13th to 17th, or alternatively, move it to early February, is open

Everything will depend on confirming the venue and the scheduling of the League and Cup. The last time the Super Cup was not played in January was in 2018, when Barça and Sevilla played a single-match final on August 12 in Tangier (Morocco), with a Barça victory (2-1) with goals from Gerard Piqué and Ousmane Dembélé.

Starting in 2020, the Super Cup moved to Saudi Arabia with a Final Four format, including semifinals and a single-leg final. In 2021, there was a pause at La Cartuja, Seville, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The RFEF does not rule out extending the contract with Arabia

On that occasion, to compensate for the 2021 edition, the RFEF added one more year (2023) to the initial three-season contract signed in 2019. Subsequently, another contract was signed, valid until 2029, and, understanding that in 2027 it will be played in another venue, it would automatically also be played in 2030 on Saudi soil.

Before the current contract expires, the RFEF is already negotiating a four-year extension, until 20344, to continue holding the Super Cup in Arabia. This year, the tournament will distribute record revenues totaling 23 million euros for the four participating clubs
