The Barça board has doubts regarding the future of Andreas Christensen. The Dane has a couple of interesting offers from Arabia, but Flick is counting on him for the 25/26 season.
Andreas Christensen is one of the players whose future is far from being defined this summer at FC Barcelona. Although the center-back has no intention of leaving, the club prefers to let him go for financial reasons. The 29-year-old center-back's contract ends in 2026 and, due to his recent history of injuries, the board is not considering his renewal.
On the contrary, Barça would be delighted to cash in this summer with the '15'. The 'Culés' signed the defender in 2022 on a free transfer and, although his attitude has been exemplary in sporting terms, his performance has been inconsistent.
After two seasons under the orders of Xavi Hernández, where he constantly went in and out of the starting lineup, he missed almost all of the 24/25 season due to muscular problems. Even so, Hansi Flick still considers him a key piece for his rotation plan.
Why does Barça want to sell Christensen? The key lies in the wage bill
In that sense, the manager's opinion may be key to stopping Christensen's departure. Barça has five center-backs in the squad, but Eric García is expected to play more as a backup for Jules Koundé on the right, or as a pivot if the team needs it.
Iñigo Martínez and Pau Cubarsí are expected to start this summer, with Ronald Araujo and the Dane as alternatives. Therefore, Flick prefers to keep the '15', even more so if Araujo, who is wanted by several clubs in Italy and England, ends up leaving in July.
However, Barça prefers to let Christensen go in order to free up wage bill. The defender earns 12 million euros gross per season and his transfer would leave around 10 'kilos' in the 'Culés' coffers.
At the moment, at least two Saudi clubs are interested in signing him, although formal offers have not yet arrived at the offices of the 'Azulgrana' team. Andreas, meanwhile, insists on continuing to play in Europe, with his mind set on the 2026 World Cup.
Andreas Christensen does not plan to leave Europe this year
Hence, the situation of the player from Lillerod is complex for the 'Culé' board. Christensen has also been mentioned as a reinforcement for several English teams, but his limited playing time in the 24/25 season (he only played 259 minutes in 6 games) has cooled the market.
In addition, the '15' does not rule out requesting the termination of his contract if, at the beginning of the preseason, he knows he is out of the club's plans for the next season. This route does not bother Barça either, because beyond not earning anything from his sale, it could free up a spot in their squad.
However, everything will depend on whether the player, in that scenario, demands the payment of his last year of contract (6 M€ net). Andreas, in his three seasons in Barcelona, has won two Leagues, two Spanish Super Cups and one Copa del Rey, playing 80 official matches in which he has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists.
