Christensen: The lack of minutes with Flick brings him closer to a winter departure. What will Barça do?
Andreas Christensen is not shaping up as Hansi Flick's favorite option among his alternatives in defense, however, he is still important in the football project of the FC Barcelona coach.
The strategist has repeatedly stressed the importance of the current players in the squad and that he counts on each of them due to the complexity of the season and the large number of matches in all competitions.
The Dane did not see minutes against RCD Mallorca despite the departure of Iñigo Martínez to Al-Nassr, with Ronald Araujo being the fixed bet to accompany Pau Cubarsí in the center of the defense this season.
The Uruguayan defender had an excellent preseason with Barça, looking very secure alongside Cubarsí in the first matchday of LaLiga, which is why Christensen will once again be relegated to the bench in 25/26.
Barça defines its roadmap with Andreas Christensen
Andreas has a contract with the culé team until June 2026, so there is a real risk that the player will negotiate with a club for his free departure in the winter market and Barça cannot afford this scenario. The same thing happened with Iñigo and another departure at 'zero cost' is not admissible.
In that sense, the Catalan club must move quickly in the renewal of the number '15' jersey, since his departure in the summer market is practically ruled out. The Lillerod native, in addition, is comfortable in Barcelona despite his limited role and is a valued piece by Hansi Flick.
Like Eric García, Christensen can occupy several defensive positions, including the role of defensive pivot. Foreseeing a demanding calendar, with up to 60 or more matches between now and May 2026, the 29-year-old defender will be important as long as he manages to stay away from the blaugrana infirmary.
The '15' already scored a goal on the Asian tour (against Seoul) and continues to train hard to be prepared for when Flick needs him. Although he knows he is the fourth center back of the team, Andreas is confident of having opportunities. If he occupies a testimonial role between now and January, then it will be time to go to the market.
Before that, however, Barça must extend his contract and secure the Dane's future. The center back arrived for free in 2022 from Chelsea and the club hopes to obtain some profit when, finally, he decides to try his luck at another club.
Christensen and other players to rotate in defense
Gerard Martín did very well in the preseason playing as a central defender, so it is also a viable option, since the left back seems well covered with Alejandro Balde and Jofre Torrents. Eric García can also return to the center of the defense (his natural position) and even Jules Koundé himself, who since the end of 2023 has been a fixture as a right back.
As things stand, Christensen starts with a disadvantage in the fight for a starting place. In total, the Dane has accumulated 80 official appearances with Barcelona with 4 goals and 3 assists with the club and faces his fourth season in Catalonia. So far, his honors include two La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups and a Copa del Rey.
