Joan Laporta confirmed Barça's desire to renew Frenkie de Jong, after his 'redemption' with Hansi Flick's team in the 24/25 season.
After three very intense summers in which his name was linked with several giants of Europe, 2025 seems to be the year in which Frenkie de Jong will finally ensure his continuity at FC Barcelona. The 28-year-old midfielder returned to his best version in 2024/25 thanks to the confidence of Hansi Flick and there is no reason to doubt his renewal.
At least that's what the Azulgrana board thinks, waiting for a new 'summit' with the Dutchman where the parties define the conditions of the new contract. This season, the Arkel native has a couple of goals and assists in 45 games (2,479 minutes), becoming the ideal partner for Pedri González in the second half of the season.
The '21' struggled to regain competitive rhythm in the final stretch of 2024 and, given the good performance of Marc Casadó, there were many rumors linked to a possible departure in the next summer market. However, Frenkie added minutes and, from February, he became a starter in the three competitions in play (League, Cup and Champions).
Joan Laporta reveals Barça's plan to renew Frenkie de Jong
In an interview with 'La Vanguardia', Joan Laporta himself revealed Barça's plan with the future of the midfielder. Beyond the rumors about the problems that could generate the Dutchman's salary (19 million gross), the board does not contemplate his departure in the short term.
"I have always been a big fan of De Jong. He is very excited, we are very determined to do whatever is necessary for him to continue and well, he is fixing some of his things, personal, professional... When this is already fixed, we will be able to announce that he continues with us", explained the Azulgrana president.
The '21' is one of the players whose contract ends in 2026, so his renewal is an absolute priority for Barça. The midfielder rejected an offer in 2023 to extend his link with the club through a salary reduction. Then, rumors about his departure increased, even more when injuries diminished his performance in 23/24.
However, Frenkie never intended to leave the club and, looking ahead to the summer, his intention is clear: to stay in a team where, for the first time since his arrival in 2019, there is full conviction about the possibility of winning all the titles at stake.
