Eric García spoke with 'Jijantes' about his future with Barça. The defender's contract ends in 2026, but he is confident of renewing soon
Eric García has taken a step forward with FC Barcelona since the arrival of Hansi Flick to the Barça bench. The 24-year-old defender was one of the players with several interesting offers to leave in the summer, but the coach convinced him to stay.
Now, the club's board has to negotiate his contract extension, as the '24' could negotiate as a free agent with any club from January 1st. After establishing himself in the Barça squad thanks to his versatility, there will be no shortage of teams interested in offering him a good contract in 2026.
Beyond the market rumors, Eric is confident of resolving the signing of his new contract with Barça soon. In a chat with 'Jijantes', the youth academy player and Spanish international made it clear his desire to stay, as long as the coaching staff counts on him.
Eric García clears up doubts about his future with Barça
"Everything will be discussed soon. We have started talking about a renewal. If everything goes well... in the summer there was all the mess of the transfer market, but now everything will be discussed," commented the player from Martorell, who also 'got wet' about his chances of being one of the captains.
Eric returned to Barça in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer, after two seasons at Manchester City. In 2023 he went on loan to Girona, a personal decision due to the lack of prominence with Xavi Hernández on the bench. After the departure of the coach from Egara, Hansi Flick opted for his continuity and, now, he is a key player in defense.
And the center-back has performed well as a defensive pivot and right-back, the latter being the position he occupied in the first two matchdays of LaLiga 25/26. With Frenkie de Jong in doubt against Valencia, García could also lend a hand in midfield.
The start of La Liga, the Champions League... Eric García unravels the current Barça situation

In his chat with Gerard Romero, the Barcelona player ruled out a slump in the team linked to the draw in Vallecas against Rayo (1-1). The 'culés' have 7 points out of a possible 9 in LaLiga, a couple less than in the previous year at this stage.
"Last year we started worse; Monaco scored three against us in the Gamper. We have grown, we are young people and we have played all three matches away," argued the player from Martorell.
In addition, Eric analyzed the impact of Iñigo Martínez's departure to Saudi Al Nassr. A surprising market move that, in fact, cleared up the rumors linked to his possible transfer and that of Andreas Christensen.
"We trained a couple of days after returning (from the Asian tour) and on the second day he told us. It was a surprise, but he has every right to decide what is best for him. He will be missed on the field, but now the young people have to take a step forward," explained García.

Finally, the '24' anticipated a difficult match for Barça in their Champions League debut against Newcastle, next Thursday in England. Eric knows the 'magpies' field well after his time at City and, beyond Alexander Isak's absence, he believes that Eddie Howe's team will give a lot of 'war' at home.
"The Newcastle field is difficult. Those of us who have played there know that it will be complicated. As will the visit of PSG". In that sense, he also made clear his position on the possible return of the team to the Spotify Camp Nou.
"In the end we will play where we have to play; doing it with our people is already a lot. We played the Gamper here (at the Ciutat Esportiva) and it was spectacular, so wherever it is, it's fine. Obviously everyone would like to play at the Camp Nou. It's exciting, seeing how it's turning out and how it will turn out is exciting," Eric García pointed out.
