Although the FC Barcelona season started off on the right foot with a victory against Mallorca away (0-3), Hansi Flick was not very happy with the performance of his players, where he emphasized that "playing at 50% or 60% is not possible against 9 players". The German coach, beyond the premiere, believes that a top-level reinforcement should come in the winter market.
The departure of Iñigo Martínez to Arab football disrupted the culé defense. In the league debut against Mallorca, he lined up Cubarsí as a left center-back. Only Andreas Christensen remained on the bench. Adding to this situation, he has not been able to register Gerard Martín, who was absent on the opening day and, despite being a full-back, can play as a left center-back.
Christensen's role, key to Barça's market plan in January
This first semester of the year will be key for Barça, which would allow Flick to assess whether he definitely needs to bring in a reinforcement in defense. In that sense, the German coach will be aware of the performance of Ronald Araujo, one of the captains, as well as the contribution that Andreas Christensen and Eric García can make.
In principle, the Dane starts as the last option in terms of center-backs, although Eric seems to be settling on the right side. Gerard Martín also had minutes in the preseason as a center-back, while Jofre Torrents is aiming to replace Alejandro Balde on the right.
In this first part of the season, the culé team must face a demanding schedule, with at least 17 matches in LaLiga EA Sports 25/26 and 6 of the 8 matches in the first phase of the Champions League, whose rivals will be known on August 28.
For this reason, it is key to have a large squad to be able to overcome the different fronts. In total, the season may demand more than 60 matches in the four competitions at stake, as long as Barça manages to reach the defining phases in each tournament.
Barça does not usually make big signings in winter
The winter market has not been a priority for Barça and that has been reflected in recent years. In fact, in the winter window of 22/23, they did not make any moves. In the transfer period, it is difficult to make acquisitions due to the high prices and the unwillingness of clubs to let their best players leave.
The mid-season transfer period that had the most movement in recent times was that of 21/22, when Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Adama Traoré and Dani Alves joined the azulgrana club. Will January 2026 be a month with many movements in the market for Barça?
