Barça keeps the option of signing Luis Díaz open, in case the negotiation with Nico Williams fails. The Colombian is willing to wait for a culé offer
The board of FC Barcelona does not rule out resuming the signing of Luis Díaz. The Colombian international was, until a couple of weeks ago, the favorite to reinforce the left side of the Blaugrana attack, but the insistence of Nico Williams to wear the culé shirt gave a twist to the plans of the sports management led by Deco.
In principle, the Athletic 'crack' seems a more sensible bet due to age (he is six years younger than 'Lucho') and price, understanding that Liverpool will hardly let the '7' go for less than 75 million euros, around 13 'kilos' more than what the transfer of the Basque winger will cost (62 M€, including VAT).
However, the latest frictions between Barça and the agent of the youngest of the Williams, Félix Tainta, have raised doubts about the feasibility of the operation. Nico's environment doubts about the club's financial capacity to register him on time and asks for guarantees (a release clause) to sign that the culés are not willing to accept.
Luis Díaz, Barça's 'plan B' if the 'Nico Williams operation' fails
In that sense, Díaz is back in the spotlight as Barcelona's 'plan B' if, for the second summer in a row, the signing of the Bilbao striker collapses. In 2024, the club decided to go for Dani Olmo after the 'no' from Pamplona and, this year, the situation may be repeated, with the Liverpool winger being the chosen one.
The reasons for betting on the Barrancas native are, at least, solid, as he is a versatile player who can also play as an attacking midfielder or 'false 9'. In addition, he is in excellent form with his club and national team. In the last FIFA date, 'Lucho' shone against Argentina, rescuing a draw for Colombia in Buenos Aires with a great goal (1-1).
In 24/25, the 28-year-old winger scored 17 goals and 8 assists in 50 games with the 'reds', being an undisputed starter for coach Arne Slot in a team that dominated the Premier League from start to finish.
Therefore, those from Merseyside have set his departure price at 80 M€, although the brutal investment for Florian Wirtz (135 M€) forces them to raise funds and Luis Díaz, without a doubt, is one of the players who can bring the best profits to the club's coffers.
Barça will have no problems in amortizing the transfer of Luis Díaz

The Colombian still has a contract until 2027 and, for the moment, only has an offer from Saudi Al Nassr that the player is not willing to accept. Bayern Munich could also go for the 'coffee maker' player, as long as Nico Williams ends up signing for Barça and Milan refuses to accept an offer below 80 'kilos' for Rafael Leao.
For Barça, the signing of 'Lucho', although it represents a greater initial investment, will not be difficult to fit into its wage bill. Unlike the Basque winger, the Liverpool attacker would sign for a salary close to 5-6 million net per season.
Nico, on the other hand, will earn about 8 'kilos' net per year as a Blaugrana player, although Athletic and Bayern offer him a higher salary (about 10 M€). Do you think Luis Díaz would be a good signing for Barça?
