The future of Álvaro Carreras could take an unexpected turn in the final stretch of the winter transfer market. Manchester United would be interested in regaining the Benfica full-back
Álvaro Carreras could make the leap to a European giant in the current winter transfer market. The 21-year-old defender, one of the left-backs on the radar of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, is rumored to be a possible reinforcement for a Manchester United that is in dire need of signings for the second half of the 2024-25 season. The 'red devils' have only managed to win 7 matches out of 17 appearances (3 draws and 7 losses) since the arrival of coach Rúben Amorim.
In this regard, portals like 'Record' and 'TEAMtalk' warned of the Portuguese coach's interest in the Spanish defender. After Benfica's defeat against Barça last week, Carreras 'spoke up' about his options to leave Lisbon for a big club in LaLiga. For the defender, there are no reasons to rule out any club for the future, but he made it clear that he is "happy" at the 'eagles', to whom he "owes everything".
United has the advantage in the bidding for Álvaro Carreras
Álvaro arrived at Estádio Da Luz last summer for 6 million euros, coming from United. Erik ten Hag did not count on him, but the 'red devils' reserved a buy option for just over 19M€ (16 million pounds). For the rest of the European clubs, his release clause is 50 'kilos'. Unlike the Dutch coach, Amorim is indeed interested in signing the player from Ferrol, one of the trendiest full-backs this season.
Thus, United has the advantage in the bidding for Carreras, who this season has scored 3 goals and provided 4 assists in 31 matches (2,686 minutes) with Bruno Lage's team. For Barça and Madrid, the 21-year-old defender remains a very interesting alternative for the left flank, just as his predecessor at Benfica, Alejandro Grimaldo, was. However, although both teams may go for a left-back next summer, the price of the Lisbon team's defender is currently too high. In fact, Álvaro left the Madrid academy for Manchester in 2020.
