It's official: FC Barcelona has a new goalkeeper. The Azulgrana team used its various communication channels to announce the signing of Joan García, who, as reported by the Barcelona team, will sign next Friday —in a private event at the club's offices— a contract until June 30, 2031.

In that sense, the 'culé' team has commented that the investment made amounts to €25M corresponding to his release clause, plus the CPI adjustment. It should be remembered that, as mentioned above, this adjustment only increased the operation by an additional 1.34 million euros, so Barcelona ended up disbursing a total of 26.3 'kilos' for the goalkeeper native to Sallent de Llobregat. This is one of the most important bets the club has made for a goalkeeper in recent times.

Joan García: the fifth case in which Barcelona pays the release clause

Joan García, who becomes just the fifth player that Barça signs by making his release clause effective, also becomes the thirtieth player to arrive at the Azulgrana team directly from RCD Espanyol. All this within the framework of an operation that, as expected, did not take long to become official. Recently, the 'perico' team had already said goodbye to the goalkeeper with a brief statement:

"Goalkeeper Joan García has paid his release clause —25 million euros— and ends his time as a player for RCD Espanyol"

For his part, Joan García himself also issued a statement to say goodbye to the 'blanquiazul' club and its fans. In it, he thanked them for the support received throughout his career and expressed his enthusiasm for facing a new professional stage.

Barça signs Joan García after his great season with Espanyol

With this incorporation, Barcelona secures the services of one of the best Spanish goalkeepers of the moment. And yes, Joan García comes from signing an impeccable 2024/25 season with RCD Espanyol, closing LaLiga as leader in:

  1. Saves made: 146
  2. Average of saves per match: 3.84
  3. Average of goals avoided: 7.49

Numbers that earned him to position himself as one of the most attractive goalkeepers on the international scene. Not for nothing it was commented that teams like Manchester City, Arsenal, Newcastle or Atlético de Madrid, among others, were interested in knowing his situation.

Finally, the player's will to join Barcelona weighed more, a club that represents not only the option of continuing in Catalonia, but also an undeniable leap in quality in his career. He thus joins a team that has just conquered the National Treble (LaLiga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup) in the 2024/25 season and that maintains an ambitious and consolidated sports project.

Joan García and the new challenge at FC Barcelona

Now, the player from Sallent de Llobregat will face a top-level competitive challenge. Beyond the demand involved in wearing the Barcelona shirt, the competition for the starting position will be intense if Marc-André ter Stegen does not leave in this summer market and the renewal of Wojciech Szczęsny is finalized.

Although Joan García arrives with the forecast of being the starting goalkeeper, it is clear that he will not be able to relax for a single moment. The fight for the Azulgrana goal promises to be red-hot, in a context where every detail can make a difference.
