Oriol Romeu negotiates his departure from Barça: Girona awaits his release

FC Barcelona could soon terminate Oriol Romeu's contract. Barring any surprises, the midfielder will be one of Hansi Flick's discards for the Asian tour, as the coach does not count on the player from Ulldecona for the 25/26 season due to the 'overbooking' of midfielders in the Barça squad.

With the return of Marc Bernal and the imminent renewal of Frenkie de Jong, in addition to the presence of Marc Casadó, Barça has enough players available for the defensive pivot position. Eric García himself can also lend a hand as a '5' in emergency cases, so Romeu has no place in the team.

In that sense, the 33-year-old player is set to return to Girona, after a season on loan in which, although he was far from the version shown in 22/23, he managed to convince Míchel to keep him in his plans.

However, the 'albirrojo' team only sees Oriol's return to Montilivi feasible as a free agent. The midfielder has a contract with Barça until 2026, but the lack of formal offers for a transfer seems to force the 'culés' to terminate the player's contract.

The 'Azulgrana' team paid 3.4 million euros for Oriol in 2023. In his only season as a 'culé', he played 39 matches (1,534 minutes) in which he provided one assist. At the moment, his salary is around 3.3 'kilos' gross per year, so Barça must agree on compensation to terminate the footballer's contract.

A similar scenario may arise with Iñaki Peña if, finally, no club presents a formal offer for the player from Alicante. The goalkeeper, however, is expected to travel to the pre-season tour with Hansi Flick's team while resolving his future.

The same happens with Pau Víctor. Unlike Iñaki, the forward does have several clubs interested in closing his transfer, but Barça is asking for at least 10 million to let him go.

In any case, Oriol Romeu continues training normally with the rest of the Barça squad while resolving his departure from the club. The midfielder has worked at the Ciutat Esportiva with a good face with the aim of getting physically fit for the start of the 25/26 season.

The previous season, the player from Ulldecona played 31 matches (6 in the Champions League) with Girona in which he added 1,805 minutes. Some physical problems diminished his performance, but Míchel still considers him one of his trusted men.

Hansi Flick, on the other hand, never took him into consideration since his arrival on the 'culé' bench last season. After ruling out the signing of another '5', the German coach trusted the young talent of Bernal and Casadó to cover the defensive pivot, a headache for Barça after the departure of Sergio Busquets.
