Guardiola is looking for a goalkeeper for Manchester City and Ter Stegen could be the ideal option. The German does not plan to leave Barça, but the signing of Joan García complicates his future
Marc-André ter Stegen's future could take a 180-degree turn this summer. Although the German has a contract for three more years with FC Barcelona, the imminent signing of Joan García casts doubt on his future. In addition, a 'heavyweight' of the Premier League would already have the '1' culé on their radar.
The latest information points to Manchester City's interest in the Barça goalkeeper and captain. Pep Guardiola prioritizes signing an alternative to Ederson who was far from his best version in 24/25, as was almost the entire squad.
The Brazilian missed 10 games due to various muscular problems and the Santpedor native does not seem willing to continue trusting a Stefan Ortega who ends his contract in 2026 and is expected to leave the Manchester team this summer.
In addition, the City's third goalkeeper, the experienced Scott Carson (39 years old), will also leave the team in June. Hence the club's need to acquire an experienced goalkeeper, capable of leading a defense that had a season to forget.
Understanding that the board will again make a high investment to reinforce the center of the field and the attack, probably the 'sky blue' team will opt for a 'low cost' alternative for the goal and Ter Stegen has an ideal profile.
Barça does not rule out putting Ter Stegen on the market this summer
In that sense, the possible signing of Joan García is the main reason to doubt the future of the culé captain. The arrival of the Espanyol goalkeeper is a luxury reinforcement for a Barça that also hopes to close soon the renewal of Wojciech Szczesny.
However, beyond the continuity of the Pole, the incorporation of the Sallent native does pose a major challenge for a Ter Stegen in theory ready to regain the starting position from the first day of 25/26.
The 33-year-old played a couple of matches in the final stretch of LaLiga (Valladolid and Villarreal) where, although he conceded 4 goals, he made it clear that he had completely overcome the serious knee injury suffered at the beginning of the season.
In any case, the club will not make hasty decisions. Once García's signing is resolved, there will probably be a meeting with the '1' to talk about his future. If Marc-André insists on staying, Barça will not consider his departure in the summer.
How much could Barça earn from Ter Stegen?
Considering his age (33) and recent history of injuries (he was also out for several months in 23/24), it is likely that Barça could earn around 10-12 million euros for the Mönchengladbach native.
A similar figure to what, in theory, the azulgrana team can receive for Iñaki Peña. The Alicante native hopes to resolve his transfer to Celta de Vigo soon, although he also has options to return to Turkey, where he already played a semester on loan to Galatasaray.
The '1', however, has a contract until 2028 and his market value on Transfermarkt is 30 'kilos'. However, he remains one of the goalkeepers with the highest hierarchy in Spanish football, the undisputed owner of the azulgrana goal for the last decade and with a total of 422 official appearances and 175 clean sheets as a culé.
