Szczesny rules out retirement and would sign a new contract with Barça
The renewal of Wojciech Szczesny with FC Barcelona seems imminent. At least that's what they say from his native Poland, where the media outlet 'Goal Polska' asserted that, after reflecting for a few days in the company of his family, 'Tek' would have made the decision to extend his link with the Blaugrana club. In fact, it is said that he could sign a contract for two seasons, thus rejecting the idea of retiring in the short term.
- SZCZESNY'S NUMBERS IN THE 2024/25 SEASON WITH FC BARCELONA: 30 matches played, 14 clean sheets and 36 goals conceded.
It should be remembered that the continuity of Szczesny at Barça was, until now, a real mystery, especially on the part of the player himself. The club had made its position very clear: they wanted to have him, at least, for one more season.
However, the Warsaw native had not confirmed whether or not he would continue in the Catalan team, leaving his future up in the air awaiting a key conversation with his wife, with whom he would decide the next step in his professional career. A career that, by the way, experienced a dream season: he was key in a Barça that ended up winning the national treble: League, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.
Szczesny could break his link with the Blaugrana club in 2026 to make way for retirement
In this sense, they also specify from Poland that, although Szczesny would be willing to accept a two-year contract with Barcelona, he could re-evaluate his future at the end of the 2025/26 season if he considers it appropriate. In turn, it is commented that the '25' would be willing to assume a more secondary role from next season, considering that Marc-André ter Stegen has already recovered from his injury and aims to regain the starting position in the Blaugrana goal.
- Szczesny, despite continuing his professional career, ruled out returning to the Polish national team after his official retirement from it in June 2024.
The renewal of 'Tek' could alter Barça's plans in the transfer market
Now it remains to be seen whether this alleged renewal movement with FC Barcelona will completely turn around the club's sports planning with regard to the signing of a goalkeeper in this summer market. In recent days, the name of Joan García has been strongly mentioned, as well as interest in other profiles such as Bart Verbruggen, from Brighton. Will Barça continue looking for a goalkeeper or will they postpone that decision for next season?
