Xavi Simons returns to Barça's radar after Nico Williams' failed signing. The Dutchman could return to Catalonia for a similar price to the Basque player, but Flick is not clear about his signing
The FC Barcelona continues to 'comb' the market in search of alternatives for the left side of their attack, after running out of Nico Williams. The latest name to join the culé radar is an old acquaintance: Xavi Simons. Due to his youth, versatility and price, the Dutch international could be a sensible alternative this summer.
The Amsterdam native turned 22 in April and has established himself as one of the most talented midfielders in the Bundesliga. With similar characteristics to Dani Olmo, Xavi can occupy multiple positions on the field, with the role of left winger/attacking midfielder being where he feels most comfortable.
In 25/26, Simons scored 11 goals and provided 8 assists in 33 matches (2,763 minutes) with his club. Although he is a player prone to muscle injuries, in addition to having a complicated character, he knows the Barça environment very well, as he trained at La Masia, although he left for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2019.
Should Barça try to sign Xavi Simons?
In that sense, Hansi Flick is still not clear about signing Xavi Simons and would prefer to incorporate a player, perhaps, with more experience (Marcus Rshford). However, Leipzig needs to raise funds with the Dutchman and the lack of formal offers for the player could allow the Barça team to negotiate a transfer for an affordable amount.
According to 'BILD', Leipzig set the '10's' exit price at 70 million euros, 20 'kilos' more than what the Germans paid PSG for his transfer after a couple of successful loans. This price coincides with the player's current value, but it is likely that his sale will end up closing for around €60M.
Barça was willing to pay that amount to Athletic for Nico Williams, which would not be an overly complex operation for the culé finances. Regarding the salary issue, Xavi currently earns 13 million gross per season, being the highest paid player in the RB Leipzig squad. In Barcelona, however, he will hardly bill more than 5-6 M€ net per year.
Bayern Munich, possible rival of Barça for Xavi Simons
In addition to Barça, another possible destination for Simons may be Bayern Munich. The Bavarians also want to incorporate another left winger and, after the serious injury suffered by Jamal Musiala against PSG (he will be out for at least 6 months), a player with the characteristics of the '10' from Leipzig fits perfectly into Vincent Kompany's scheme.
The Munich team, in fact, also has Fermín López in their sights to replace Musiala, but Barça does not plan to let the Huelva native go for less than 70 million. Would it be worth sending the '16' to Bayern to sign Xavi Simons? Financially, the operation would leave a positive balance for the culé coffers. In sports, we would have to wait for the Dutchman's performance.
