Liverpool's free fall in the 25/26 season seems to have no end. On Wednesday, Arne Slot's team was eliminated from the League Cup with another defeat against Crystal Palace, the 6th in the 'Reds' last 7 games
The 'galácticos' project in Liverpool is going through its most delicate moment. After a summer with an investment of close to 500 million euros in signings, the 'red' team has hit rock bottom with a bad streak that seems endless.
After starting 2025/26 with 5 straight wins in the Premier League and another pair of victories in the Champions League and League Cup, Arne Slot's team has only managed one win in their last seven games. On Wednesday, Crystal Palace once again soured things for the Merseyside team, this time knocking them out of the 'EFL Cup' at Anfield with a thrashing (0-3).
Liverpool Misses Out on League Cup After Humiliating Defeat at Anfield
Oliver Glasner's team had already surprised Liverpool in the Community Shield (2-2, 3-2 on pens.), in addition to breaking their unbeaten run in the Premier League (2-1). In the round of 16 of the League Cup, Slot opted for an XI full of substitutes and the 'Eagles' prevailed with authority.
A brace from Ismalia Sarr practically sealed the tie before halftime. Near the end, the home side were reduced to ten men after Amara Nallo was sent off, and Yéremy Pino completed the rout in the 88th minute. Thus, the 'Reds' bid farewell to the first title of the season.
In the 24/25 season, Liverpool reached the League Cup final, but fell to Newcastle (1-2). The Premier League title, however, reinforced confidence in Arne Slot, who, after the arrival of figures such as Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Alexander Isak, in addition to Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, has been unable to find even a reliable lineup.
Real Madrid could end Arne Slot's cycle next week
City, Liverpool, and Juventus: a very tough draw for Real Madrid in the Champions League
And the thing is that the team from Merseyside, beyond winning the first five league games, failed to win any match comfortably. The only clear victory so far came in the third matchday of the Champions League (1-5 against Eintracht), a result that is, in fact, the only triumph in the team's last seven appearances.
The 'reds' bad streak began with the defeat against Palace on matchday 6 of the Premier League. Afterwards, Liverpool fell in the Champions League against Galatasaray (1-0) and in the following three league dates (Chelsea, Manchester United and Brentford). At Anfield, Wednesday's was the second consecutive defeat, a result that leaves Slot on the ropes.
The Dutch coach remained silent after the match, and next Tuesday he could receive a lethal blow if the 'Reds' fail to defeat Real Madrid at home for Matchday 4 of the Champions League. Before that, on Saturday, Liverpool will host Aston Villa at Anfield, probably with a lot of tension in the stands. The schedule is also very tough, as the next opponent, after Madrid, will be City.
