Andreas Christensen opened up about his future at Barcelona in an interview with the Danish magazine 'Tipsbladet'. The center-back insists on renewing with Barça and, for now, rules out a 'plan B'
FC Barcelona has not yet defined the future of Andreas Christensen. The 29-year-old defender is one of the players whose contract ends in 2026 and, at the moment, there is no progress regarding his renewal, although the '15' is open to negotiating a new contract. Hansi Flick counts on him, but the club does not see his permanence clearly.
First, because since his arrival at Barça in 2022, he **has not been an undisputed starter**. Second, because **his recent injury history** raises doubts about the future. Christensen missed almost all of 24/25 due to muscle problems and has only started three times this season.
In an interview with the local magazine 'Tipsbladet', the Danish international, once again called up by his national team for the closing World Cup qualifiers (against Belarus and Scotland), made it clear that, **for now, he does not feel worried about the future**. Furthermore, he reiterated his intention to stay in Barcelona, as he feels comfortable at the club and in the city.
Christensen's Options: Renewal or 'Free Transfer' Exit
"Of course, one wants to have everything under control and know what's happening, but it's not something that affects us during the day, nor something we talk about. I try to do what I can on the field and I hope that's enough to keep me here," he argued, referring to his current situation with the team.
In this regard, he considers that the relationship with the board is "good" and, now, he rules out having a 'plan B' related to his renewal or signing with another club as a free agent in 2026.
"I hope everything ends up being renewed, but I have no idea, not yet. I prefer to focus on being part of the team and playing as much as I can. **Now I have to see what happens. If there's something to do, of course I'll do it**," he stated when discussing the terms of a potential new contract.
Currently, Christensen earns around 9 million gross per season, a considerable salary for a player who is not a regular starter. The board values his professionalism and willingness to stay, but prefers to wait before making a decision.
If the '15' becomes an important piece for Hansi Flick's rotation plan, it will be more feasible to offer him a contract extension. If, on the other hand, **he remains in a residual role, it will be most sensible to let him go on a free transfer**, just as he arrived from Chelsea in 2022
Andreas Christensen does not rule out returning to Denmark
Regarding the possibility of returning to the club where he started (Brondby), Andreas Christensen does not deny that it would be ideal, but he understands that he still has plenty of ability to continue competing at the European elite level, whether with Barça or in another of the top five leagues.
"I feel like I still have a lot to contribute, I'm 29 years old, I can still compete. When you're that age, it depends a lot on the situation, so it's hard to say. I repeat that, in an ideal world, I would like to return to Brondby," the Lillerod native pointed out.
In his almost three and a half seasons with Barça, Christensen has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists in 90 official matches. Like Eric García, he is a versatile center-back, with experience on the flank and as a defensive midfielder. If he manages to stay healthy, he will be an important piece for the Barça defense in 2026
