Eric García has taken a step forward with Barça in the final stretch of 24/25, sparking the interest of several clubs in Europe. Will the Azulgrana team let him go?
As happened in the past winter market, the name of Eric García continues to resonate strongly on the radar of several clubs ahead of the next transfer window. A week before the opening of the summer market, due to the Club World Cup, at least three teams seem willing to put several million on the table to keep the FC Barcelona defender.
In that sense, the latest information points to the interest of Girona and Real Sociedad, as well as the Italian Como, in the player from Martorell. Cesc Fàbregas already tried to take him to Serie A in January, but Hansi Flick convinced the Catalan footballer to stay in Barcelona. In the end, the coaching staff's bet was successful, as Eric was key in the final stretch of the season.
After Jules Koundé's absence, García took over the right-back position, achieving good performances in La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League. In total, the '24' has accumulated 5 goals and 3 assists in 44 matches (2,014 minutes) in 24/25, acceptable records for a player who was the best wildcard in defense for Flick.
Hansi Flick does not look favorably on Eric García's departure
Eric lent a hand as a pivot and full-back when injuries complicated the team, so he has full confidence from the staff for the next season. However, being within the group of players whose contract expires in 2026, the club prioritizes resolving his future as soon as possible. If the 24-year-old defender rules out renewing, his transfer will be a fact.
In that context, Barça would receive around 12-15 million euros for his transfer. García returned to the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2021 after four seasons at Manchester City (two with the first team). So far, he has 6 goals and 5 assists in 114 official appearances with the first team, with 24/25 being his best season with the Azulgrana shirt.
Although he was never untouchable in the culé defense, he managed to earn the trust of Xavi Hernández and Hansi Flick thanks to his versatility to cover several defensive positions. In 2023 he went on loan to Girona, performing at a high level during a historic season for the 'albirrojos' (the team finished third in LaLiga, behind Madrid and Barça).
Barça will define Eric's future in June
Hence, Míchel's team made several efforts to recover him in the last two transfer windows. In any case, Barcelona hopes to meet with the defender and his agent to define his contractual situation. If Eric stays, it is very likely that Héctor Fort will leave due to the lack of opportunities on the right side.
