Frenkie de Jong is expected to change agents soon, a key move to unlock his renewal with Barça

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The future of Frenkie de Jong at FC Barcelona would be closer to being defined this summer. The 28-year-old midfielder has a contract until 2026 and receives one of the highest salaries in the squad, but he has no intention of leaving and both the board and the coaching staff are committed to his continuity.

However, negotiations for the signing of a new contract have been very complicated in recent months, more due to the desire of his agent to continue increasing the midfielder's salary than by the player's decision.

In that sense, the latest information about Frenkie has to do with his intention to break the relationship with Ali Dursun, who has been his representative since the Arkel native joined the Willem II academy in 2013.

The Turkish agent and De Jong have had several disagreements regarding the way negotiations with Barça have been handled in the last two years to resolve his renewal. And, beyond market rumors, the '21' has never considered leaving the Blaugrana team.

Frenkie de Jong's renewal with Barça, much closer

Similarly, his renewal is considered a priority for the board, so the change of agent must be key to resolving Frenkie's future. At the beginning of 24/25, the Dutchman seemed to be lagging behind in Hansi Flick's plans due to his physical problems.

However, De Jong's level took a noticeable leap in quality this 2025, settling in the starting XI as a partner of Pedri González in midfield. The Arkel native closed the year with 46 games (2,488 minutes) in which he added a couple of goals and assists, in addition to recovering his best version since he shone with Ajax in 18/19.

Hence, Joan Laporta himself recently admitted his desire to renew him soon. "He is very excited, we are very determined to do whatever is necessary for him to continue, and well, he is fixing some things of his that, when he finishes them, we can announce that he continues at the club," said the Blaugrana president in a chat with 'TV3'.

Frenkie de Jong reappeared with the Netherlands before defining his future

Thus, Frenkie de Jong's break with his representative paves the way for the renewal of another key piece for a Barcelona that, before thinking about reinforcements, prioritizes securing the future of all its figures this summer.

In the case of the 28-year-old midfielder, the goal is to renew him before June 30, in order to avoid new market rumors associated with his departure to another 'top' league in Europe or Arabia.

On Saturday, the '21' culé played the 90 minutes in the Netherlands' victory against Finland (0-2). The midfielder was a figure in the debut of the 'Orange' in the European qualifier for the 2026 World Cup, where Ronald Koeman's team shares Group G with Robert Lewandowski's Poland, Lithuania and Malta.
