Tottenham beat Chelsea by paying €60M for Xavi Simons. This is how this 'blockbuster' was orchestrated in the final stretch of the summer market
Xavi Simons is now a new Tottenham player. The 'Spurs' beat Chelsea by paying 60 million euros fixed plus 10 'kilos' extra in variables to RB Leipzig, in a quick move orchestrated thanks to the call from Daniel Levy, president of the club, to the 22-year-old player.
The offensive midfielder traveled to London first thing Friday to close his transfer for five seasons, until June 2030, with an option for two more years. "Tottenham called and I answered. I will bring style to the team, but also hard work and discipline", commented the former FC Barcelona youth player after his presentation.

Simons, who will wear the number '7' in the Premier League, comes from scoring 22 goals and 24 assists in 78 games with Leipzig. Now, he arrives with the mission of leading the attack of Thomas Frank's team, who have started the Premier League with two victories (one of them against Manchester City by 0-2) and will play the league phase of the Champions League.
This is how Tottenham's 'theft' from Chelsea with Xavi Simons was orchestrated
Chelsea also had the signing of the Dutchman on track, but finally the London team presented a better offer to Leipzig. The Germans had paid 50 'kilos' to Paris Saint-Germain in January for his transfer, after a year and a half on loan.
Finally, the club earns €10M with the operation, although the one from Amsterdam ended up leaving for a price lower than its current value in 'Transfermarkt' (€70M). Previously, Xavi Simons was on loan for a year at PSV Eindhoven, where he also left very good records (22 goals and 11 assists in 48 appearances).
The Dutchman was close to accepting Chelsea's offer, but the 'Blues' did not intend to exceed 60 million net for his signing. Tottenham, on the other hand, did reach this figure through variables, with which RB Leipzig ensures its second 'top' sale of the summer, after the transfer of Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United for 90 'kilos'.
As things stand, the player trained at La Masia would be a great contribution to the 'Spurs' after the injury of James Maddison who will be out for a long period of time. Barça explored the possibility of recovering him, but the problems with 'Fair Play' closed the door to a negotiation with the German team.
Chelsea will put more money for Fermín López after Xavi Simons' 'no'
All this may lead to a domino effect in the transfer market since Chelsea, losing one of their main targets of the market, will go with great force for Fermín López. Barça rejected an initial offer of €65M for the player from Huelva, who has not yet defined whether or not to leave the Barça team this summer.
The '16' assured after the 'manita' to Como 1907 in the Gamper (5-0) that he would stay in Barcelona, but he would have doubted his continuity after his substitution against Levante (2-3) and the dizzying proposals from Chelsea and Newcastle.
Both teams would offer him 'top' salaries, well above the 4 million gross that he currently receives in Catalonia. The 'blues' could pay him €15M gross per year, while Newcastle would offer up to 100 'kilos' just for his transfer.
In any case, Fermín knows that he will continue to be important in Hansi Flick's rotation plan. And, with Barça, he can aspire to win everything in 2026. The club, however, will respect his decision, as a sale of more than 70 million would solve the culé problems with 'Fair Play' financial.
